Purpose The Director of Accounting is responsible for the following areas:
Developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures that ensure accurate and timely financial statements
Overseeing the processing of all transactions, general ledger preparation, financial reporting, year-end audit preparation, and the support of budget and forecast activities
Engaging with all aspects of the college's finances and support the college administration in developing strategies, policies, and objectives
Coordinating with external consultants in developing budgets, long-range financial forecasting, and the development and processing of tax levies
Collaborating with our investment partners responsible for the college's investments
Performing risk analysis to assess areas of improvement in all aspects of financial management, improve business processes, identify opportunities for investment, and minimize risk to the institution
Overseeing all aspects of the business office and provide regular reports to the cabinet

Major Responsibilities / Assists With / Risk Management
Primary Responsibilities:
Oversee and direct all financial operations at the college.
Manage accounting and business office staff.
Maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure.
Ensure an accurate and timely week, month, quarterly, and year-end close.
Prepare financial statements for monthly Board meetings.
Cash-flow management and projections.
Budgeting and cost-control projects.
Oversee all of the Accounts Payable and general accounting function.
Work in partnership with the outside audit firm on all auditing and tax matters.
Expense reports and cost-control/analysis work.
Provide training to new and existing staff as needed.
Evaluate, implement, and manage technology systems.
Other duties as assigned.
Risk-Management and Loss-Prevention Activities:
Actively participate in and carry out activities in support of the college risk-management program in a capacity appropriate to this position.
Monitor conditions, events, and circumstances present in the college operation to avoid potential torts or injuries to students, staff, or the general public, and then communicate observations to the appropriate supervisor and/or Risk-Management Committee.
Maintain a working knowledge of the college's emergency procedures and how to operate emergency phone systems, including internal/external call boxes.
Minimum Necessary Skills, Experience, and Educational Background
Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance require. Advanced degree in accounting or finance preferred.
A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years previous public accounting or accounting management experience required.
Knowledge of general accounting principles.
Knowledge of payroll accounting.
Proficient in using automated systems.
High degree of accuracy and problem-solving skills.
Strong computer skills including word processing, database management, and spreadsheets.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work with multiple deadlines in a fast-paced setting.
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.

Spanish or French proficiency preferred.
Physical Requirements to Perform Job Function
Basic dexterity skills (computer work, telephoning, and other office equipment).
General physical effort required includes sitting, bending, reaching, and some lifting (20 lbs. or less) and the ability to place a work order for anything over that limit.
