Boarding Associate Objectives: Provides care and the basic needs of animals that are being boarded that are patients of KKM Veterinary Clinic including cleaning of cages, runs, indoor and outdoor play areas, laundry, walking, and proper feeding, medicating, daycare monitoring, cleaning and upkeep of facilities, and care of hospitalized patients when applicable.
Position type and expected hours of work:
  • Full or Part-Time
  • Up to 12-hour Shifts Monday – Sunday
  • Weekend shifts are required.
  • Overtime may be required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Clerical
  • Record information such as feeding schedules, appearance, behavior of animals that are boarded, groomed or hospitalized. Communication of concerns over pet health or behavior are to be reported to Supervisor or veterinary Clinic staff on duty immediately.
Veterinary Polices/Procedures
  • Exhibit a technical knowledge of applicable products and medications sold, including dietary products. Demonstrate the ability to explain and educate clients on applicable products and answer their questions regarding product purchase/use.
Technical
The following duties are to be performed when applicable, consistently, and per documented procedure.
  • Observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discontent. Report issues to supervisor on duty immediately.
  • Handle animals as required and restrain animals per documented procedure.
  • Walk boarded dogs several times a day to provide exercise and time for elimination of bowels and bladder.
  • Monitor daycare animals consistently and per documented procedure, including ability to break up dogs that are interacting poorly in the play session.
  • Bath boarded and hospitalized (when applicable) animals.
  • Provide care for animals housed/visiting the Hospital when applicable. Report signs of illness, disease, injury or unusual activity to Lodge Supervisor immediately.
  • Apply knowledge of normal food and liquid requirements of animals. As required, provide special food and liquids.
  • Discharge and admit animals at the request of receptionists, practitioners and animal health technicians per documented procedure. Assure animals being discharged have been checked by animal health technician and/or practitioner when applicable. Ensure that animals are clean and fresh-smelling prior to discharge.
  • Under the supervision of Lodge Supervisor/Veterinarians/Veterinary Technicians, assist with the administration of medications as needed for boarding animals.
  • Ensure that cages and animals are properly numbered and identified and that personal property (toys, treats, blankets, leashes) are stored in the proper area and identified per documented procedure.
  • Clean, disinfect and maintain kennels, cages, runs and stalls as often as is necessary to ensure no cages or kennels are soiled and odors are not apparent. Perform general cleaning in other areas of the hospital to control the spread of disease. Wash and sterilize water and food bowls.
  • Launder and dry towels and blankets.
  • Patrol hospital grounds daily, picking up any trash and stool material. Empty trash. All staff members are expected to perform these duties when necessary and at all times, regardless of what specific duties have been assigned.
  • Provide 1-1 play sessions with any animals signed up
  • Perform group play evaluations to determine if group play is a good fit or if 1-1 plays are needed instead.
  • Interact with daycare dogs during play sessions a minimum of 4 hours/day.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to hazards associated with aggressive patients; hazards associated with infected animals and controlled substances; exposure to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes; possible exposure to contagious diseases.
Work is normally performed both inside and outside. All employees are required to furnish necessary clothing to protect from the elements during any shift worked.
