Assistant Teachers are responsible for providing support to classroom teachers—the general education and special education teacher-in the ICT classroom or the general education teacher in the general education classroom. They report to the Director of Special Student Services.
Responsibilities
● Work with students, under the supervision of classroom teachers, to deliver and support instruction.
● Help students adjust, learn and socialize; and report to teachers regarding possible behavioral issues.
● Assist teachers with preparation of lesson plans.
● Manage the classroom and provide instruction in the absence of classroom teacher/s.
● Support the needs of students who are academically at-risk as determined by the students’ IEP or RtI programs.
● Provide support and interventions for students who are having a difficult time emotionally or behaviorally-spending time in the Sanctuary corner or stepping out of class to come back to baseline behavior.
● Respond to the needs of individual students and modify instruction for students to reflect their abilities, needs, interests and cultural differences. Support small group and one-to-one instruction as needed.
● Review materials being taught in class with individual students with learning challenges.
● Work with smaller groups of students for remedial teaching or reinforcement of the learning process.
● Research and plan field trips ( virtual or live).
● Escort and supervise students on field trips and during class activities.
● Contribute to the creation of a nurturing, non-competitive and engaging classroom to encourage student achievement and growth.
● Ensure a safe and tidy classroom space before, during and after class.
● Work collaboratively with teachers, parents, administrators and other colleagues.
● Attend faculty meetings and staff development sessions.
● Help classroom teachers prepare for parent conferences, report card and narrative summaries and school events in order to maximize parent participation.
● Support classroom teachers in maintaining accurate and functional monitoring systems, including both formal and informal assessments
● Collaborate with the lead teacher to maintain an effective and well-communicated plan for classroom management. This includes the development and routine reinforcement of rules and discipline strategies aligned with the school’s philosophy and procedures.
● Track classroom attendance and class schedules.
● Assist in creating safe and nurturing meals and recess periods.
● Actively participate in supporting the school environment as needed-school performances, PTC’s, etc.
● Support the ELL identification process by assisting families with the completion of the HLS at the time of registration.
● Assist with the review and tracking of HLS’s and students who are candidates for personal interviews.
● Participate in PAF training and support the program throughout the year as needed.
Expected Qualifications
● Fulfillment of all “highly qualified” requirements.
● Appropriate New York State certifications.
● Experience working in an elementary environment as a teaching assistant or in other relevant educational positions is preferred.
● Bachelor’s Degree, or higher degree is preferred.
● Experience working with diverse populations of students, parents and families is preferred.
● Commitment to continuous improvement and learning through professional development.
● Understanding of and commitment to the mission, goals, educational philosophy and activities of the school, as described in the school’s charter.
● Bilingual Spanish/English a plus'
