Increased hiring rate for this role, $17.50-19/hour depending upon experience & education! Positions available in Braintree & Hanover, MA!

30-40 hours a week available, M-F days!

At the Cardinal Cushing Centers, we support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, providing possibilities and opportunities for growth and advancement. Our programs for students, adults and community members include education, employment training, transition services, residential care, therapeutic and recreational services.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES COMMON TO THIS JOB DESCRIPTION

General

  • Upholds the mission and corporate values of Cardinal Cushing Centers.
  • Promotes and adheres to the tenets of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Assures visibility and availability to individuals receiving supports, families, DDS representatives, other providers and community resources including companies businesses and civic organizations.
  • Provides consultation to other staff of Cardinal Cushing Centers in areas of expertise.
  • Regular attendance and promptly reporting to work at the beginning of the scheduled shift are essential functions of this position.
  • Promotes the foundations of Social Role Valorization and Positive Behavioral Supports within Adult Services.

Promoting empowerment, self-direction and self-determination

  • Treats the person with the disability as the primary decision-maker.
  • Provides accurate and timely information to individuals.

Communication skills

  • Provides basic counseling to individuals about issues that concern them.
  • Adapts communication to individual needs including paraphrasing, translating or using adaptive devices.
  • Shows sensitivity to multicultural and multilingual needs.
  • Uses effective, sensitive communication skills to build trust.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of all communications to ensure the privacy of individuals supported.

Building relationships and community connections

  • Identifies the types of formal and informal supports needed by an individual.
  • Assists individuals in accessing and coordinating needed supports.
  • Helps individuals to develop and maintain friendships and other relationships.
  • Connects with community members and organizations (e.g., employer, civic organizations).
  • Shows sensitivity to cultural, religious, racial, disability and gender issues in daily practices and interactions.
  • Engages in and promotes sensitive, genuine and warm interactions with individuals and their families.

Health and safety

  • Assists individuals in meeting personal physical needs (e.g., health, personal hygiene, appearance and medical).
  • Evidences competency in first aid practices and awareness of illness prevention and medication side-effects.
  • Uses and encourages others to use Universal Precautions to control the spread of infections.
  • Follows emergency procedures and protocols.
  • Uses Safety Care techniques competently and cautiously when physically intervening with an individual.
  • Periodically conducts fire drills according to Department policy and procedures.

Crisis intervention

  • Identifies the crisis and defuses the situation, ensuring the safety of all concerned.
  • Learns from past and current problems to prevent them in the future.
  • Monitors crisis situations, discusses the situation with authorized persons, adjusts supports, and follows reporting procedures.

Ethical conduct

  • Respects individual human, civil and legal rights and assists individuals in exercising these rights.
  • Reports to appropriate authorities the occurrence of emotional or physical abuse or any other activity that adversely affects individuals.
  • Maintains standards of confidentiality and ethical practice.
  • Promotes justice and equal treatment of all persons.
  • Recognizes the importance of individual need over other demands.

Department

  • Provide support to individuals in a 1:1 or group format as defined in the ISP/ DHSP.
  • Write reports, including daily logs, utilizing professional, appropriate documentation skills.
  • Work in cooperation with Case Manager(s) to develop member skills in the areas of self-help, self-preservation, expressive communication, self-direction and activities of daily living.
  • Implements curriculum of therapeutic activities with a focus on development of skills as outlined in individuals’ DHSP.
  • Implement all plans as outlined by OT, PT, Speech, Nursing and Behavioral objectives.
  • Provide transportation to community activities as needed. May require use of personal vehicle if program vehicle is unavailable.
  • Assist and support individuals as needed with physical care. May include physical or mechanical transfer of individuals from wheelchairs to a van, chair, toilet etc.
  • Maintain individual’s confidential records.
  • Assist individuals in making decisions about their daily routine/activities.
  • Assure that individuals have access to communication with family, friends and significant others.
  • Assist individual’s to participate in community events, volunteer sites, libraries, YMCA’s and any particular place of interest to them to enhance their therapeutic goals. This includes swimming with individuals in pools.
  • Maintain appropriate certifications (i.e. First Aid, CPR, Safety Care, Fire Safety, Human Rights, Etc.).
  • Knowledge and understanding of principles of normalization, PBS, and human rights.

  • Assumes additional responsibilities as required.

Related Work Experience

  • At least one year of experience working in a program with individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Formal Education, Certification, Licensing

  • Must have a High School diploma or equivalent, Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Receive initial certification and re-certification as appropriate in CPR, First Aid, & Safety Care
