Capital Health is Hiring a Surgical Technician Lead - Perioperative Near Trenton, NJ

Overview

Position #: 4906

Works with surgeons and other health care practitioners providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings. Handles instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during surgical procedures. Has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. Possesses the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure through maintenance of the sterile field. Serves as a resource in a lead role for other Surgical Technicians in department.

Responsibilities

  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, which includes passing instruments, sutures and other items appropriate to the procedure. Assists the surgeon by retracting tissue, holding instrumentation to provide exposure and cutting suture under the direct supervision of the surgeon.
  • Establishes and maintains an organized sterile field. Selects proper sterilization methods for instruments and equipment: sterilizes prior to procedure, and verifies instruments are sterile.
  • Adheres to policies and procedures in aseptic techniques. Takes corrective action when any unsafe practice, conditions or break in aseptic technique observed and reports information to the circulating nurse.
  • Assists with pulling cases and checks case cart for completeness, obtains supplies and equipment and determines them to be in good working order before a case begins.
  • Prepares the operating room by opening sterile supplies, instruments and sutures based on scheduled procedure and surgeon preference card.
  • Follows policies for scrubbing, gowning, gloving, setting up back table, draping and counting with the circulating nurse. Performs scrub assistance for all procedures.
  • Assists the circulating nurse with implementing a plan of care to include positioning, confirmation of operative site, updating physician preference cards, care of specimens, and room turnover.
  • Accounts for instruments, trays, implants, before during and after the case. Begins Sterilizing process while in the surgical suite by counting for completeness of tray, initiating cleansing/sterilizing process. Accesses supplies in medication storage areas, including needles and syringes.
  • Serves as a working, hands-on, and interactive team member who demonstrates strong leadership abilities. Assists in coordination and delivery of patient care in the surgical suite under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and Assistant Nurse Manager.
  • Organizes the workflow within the specialty to achieve optimum performance. Functions in collaboration with specialty team leader and acts as a liaison between all members of the multidisciplinary health care team, and actively participates in unit and system-wide committees. Demonstrates strong preceptor and mentoring skills.
  • Maintains supply levels within the specialty and assists the Nurse Manager and Assistant Nurse Manager in the overall function of the service line. Ensures proper supplies are available in the department and all rooms are properly stocked.
  • Participates in strategic planning and operational processes for the unit. Assists the Nurse Manager and Assistant Nurse Manager in preparation and maintenance of the service line.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement initiatives within the unit. Demonstrates competency in use of computer, and hospital base systems. Performs assigned role as directed by Nurse Manager and Assistant Nurse Manger willingly.
  • Provides courteous customer services to personnel utilizing the services of this department. Maintains open communication and is available for providing education to other surgical staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED. Completion or graduate of a New Jersey approved or accredited program for surgical technicians or graduate of an LPN school with current LPN license. Certification from nationally recognized body for surgical technician preferred.
  • Three years of Operating Room experience.
  • AHA BLS. Non-Licensed must obtain before end of orientation period
  • Good understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology, foundations of surgical technology, surgical procedures, and surgical instrumentation. Demonstrated expertise instructing, evaluating, and overseeing surgical technologists and staff within the surgical suite. Subject matter expert within the specialty.
