Position Description

The Boys and Girls Club of the Capital Area (BGCCA) is operated by CACS. BGCCA’s Mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. BGCCA programs help youth create aspirations for the future, providing opportunities for career exploration and educational enhancement. Helping youth become responsible, caring citizens and acquire skills for participating in the democratic process is the main thrust of Club programs. They also develop leadership skills and provide opportunities for planning, decision-making, contributing to Club and community and celebrating our national heritage.

The Director of Programs & Youth Development is responsible for the overall program management and implementation of programs at BGCCA. This position oversees the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of exciting, engaging age - appropriate programs that support our priority outcome areas of Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, Good Character, and Citizenship. This position also provides management and supervision to assigned program and volunteer staff; manages budgets and controls expenses related to programming and provides overall leadership in the development and implementation of youth development instructional strategies, and content. They are responsible for bringing research and evidence-based practices and strategies into the Club environment and will manage the Club’s evaluation system.

Duties / Responsibilities:

Programming Development and Management

Oversee the provision of day-to-day program activities in accordance with established standards, goals, and grant requirements. 

Coordinate activities including field trip opportunities to expose members to educational activities, sporting activities, science, and technology activities.

Ensure grant outcomes and deliverables are met for all programming and grant funded programs.

Coordinate Club participation in the annual BGCA Youth of the Year program ensuring the program is represented annually.

Supervise 21st Century staff & Lead YDS and organize all trainings and professional development for them.

Plan, coordinate, and evaluate quality youth programs directly and through collaborations.

Collaborate with other departments/organizations deliver quality programs to club members and potential members.

Ensure a healthy and safe environment, supervising members in program area.

Manage programming facilities and ensure a productive work environment, maintaining an inventory of all program equipment and supplies in good order. 

Lead new members visits and run Club orientations.

Ensure the evaluation of Club programs on a continual basis, including tracking outcome metrics, verify that programs/activities respond to member needs and address their gender and cultural diversity.

Provide program assessment and evaluation and provide leadership with direction regarding continuation, expansion, or elimination of programs.

Oversee proper record keeping and reporting, including activities and events conducted breakdowns of daily participation figures, notable achievements, and any problems/issues.

Increase visibility of Club programs via posting of daily schedule, announcements of upcoming events ad dissemination of timely information for the development of advertising and promotion through mailings, fliers, and media releases.

Assist with redirection and behavior; communicate with parents regarding member activities and behavior.

Complete purchase requisitions, and control expenditures against monthly supply budget and creatively use resources for use in programming.

Resource Development and Management

Serve as grant administrator for complying with grant requirements related to specific programming.

Exploring new grant opportunities and funding options for high-yield activities that meet Club initiatives.

Developing specialized programming budgets for leadership approval.

Develop strategic alliances and collaborative partnerships with other youth-serving organizations, members, parents, families and community organizations that are meaningful and outcome-driven.

PR and Marketing

Create infographics demonstrating program participation and effectiveness. 

Create marketing material for new and upcoming programming.

Provide public presentations sharing Club services and programs.

Increase visibility of Club programs via posting of daily schedule, announcements of upcoming events and the dissemination of timely information for the development of advertising and promotion through mailings, fliers and media releases.

Strategic Planning

Oversee proper record keeping and reporting of all programs including community outreach, programmatic statistical data, special activities, and events conducted. Demonstrate breakdown of daily program participation data, notable achievements, and any problem/issues.

Evaluate overall program effectiveness and program quality based on participation and achievement of stated goals; recommend modification to improve program performance or create new program offerings; oversee development of evaluations for programs. Manage the quality improvement process.

Conduct surveys, town halls and other feedback mechanisms to ensure and informed data-driven approach to decision making.

In collaboration with the CEO, facilitate the strategic planning process with the Board of Directors.

Work to increase the visibility of BGCCA’s brand, services and activities ensuring that Boys & Girls of the Capital Area is positioned as the youth development organization of choice in Central South Dakota.

Other Duties

Other relevant duties as assigned.

Participate in special programs and/or events.

Open/close building on a rotational basis.

Required Skills / Abilities:

Excellent computer skills/proficient in computer applications, specifically MS Office

Flexibility to work different hours, especially as seasons and service needs change.

Knowledge of office management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work.

Problem solving skills.

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Strong organizational and planning skills.

Valid Driver’s License.

Education and Experience:

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education, master’s degree in Education, Curriculum, or Human Development preferred.

Current Child Development Associate (CDA) certification or required to obtain the certification within the first year of employment. 

3 years’ experience working with children, supervisory experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Requires periods of moving throughout the office and traveling to other locations within the community.

Requires periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Requires periods of standing and frequent bending.

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
