Overview:The principal role of this intern position is to introduce a pre-entry level material scientist to Matalco’s operations and to assist a plant’s Quality Department with improving metallurgical practices at the affected Matalco plant. Key responsibilities include working with floor level personnel to gain understanding of and improve metallurgical practices, conduct metallurgical testing to determine process capabilities, and audit quality processes.Internship Includes:This is paid internship with base pay of $23.00/hrReal-world experience that provides a competitive edge upon graduationCasual work environmentNetworking with leadership and functional plant leaders.Assignment time frame: Summer 2024 (May – August) with opportunity to work during the following school year.Responsibilities:Prepare metallographic samples (sample sectioning, mounting, polishing)Perform investigations/failure analysis to determine root cause of defects and aluminum quality issuesProduce quality investigative reports and material related documentationUtilize optical and scanning electron microscopy to evaluate metallurgical featuresAnalyze material for alloy cleanliness and characterizationThe position must frequently seek cooperation from, persuade, or influence others. The incumbent must develop relationships and persuade others to resolve problems, change people's minds or directly produce customer satisfaction.Up to 20% travel required (if needed). Qualifications:Must have completed 90 or more credit hours by the end of the spring 2024 semesterMinimum cumulative GPA of 2.7Must be a full-time student attending an accredited two-year or four-year college/universityPreferred majors: Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or MetallurgyMust be legally authorized to work at a company in the U.S. or Canada without sponsorship.Problem solving skills.Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.Strong communication, presentation, and team skills.Excellent organizational and time management skills.Self-motivated with a high level of initiative, able to work well independently. Working ConditionsOccasional exposure to industrial operations including: temperature extremes from approximately 35ºF to 100ºF; noise levels in excess of 85 dB; moisture and moving machinery.Work is mainly performed in an office setting, with some time spent in a manufacturing environment All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status.
