Cancer Care Specialists of Illinois is Hiring a Nurse Practitioner - Hematology-Oncology Near Decatur, IL

SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the attending physician, the Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing primary health care and performing selective medical services. In addition, the Nurse Practitioner will function as an integral part of the patient care team in the hematology/oncology department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Obtain complete medical history and physical data on patients. Review patient records.
  • Interpret and integrate data to determine appropriate diagnostic therapeutic procedures needed.
  • Perform a complete physical exam and record findings. Establish presumptive diagnosis.
  • Order appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
  • First assist physician with office or surgical procedures as appropriate.
  • Administer injections and oral medications. Suture wounds. Prepare written prescription orders for drugs and controlled substances.
  • Interview and advise patients regarding health and illness prevention. Recommend community resources to meet patient and family needs.
  • Instruct patient and family regarding medications and treatment instructions. Provide patient education.
  • Assist physicians by recording patient progress notes, issue diagnostic orders, and transcribe orders.
  • Triage patient telephone calls and provide consultation.
  • Perform independent evaluations and treatment procedures in emergency situations.
  • Provide monitoring and continuity of care between physician visits.
  • Participate in professional development activities and maintain professional affiliations.
  • Manage illnesses per collaborative agreement with physicians.
  • Plan and implement patient education programs as requested.
  • Emphasize illness prevention and wellness as part of care.
  • Evaluate health status of patients and manage acute or chronic minor illness per collaborative agreement with physician(s).
  • Participate in research activities in collaboration with the physicians.
  • Visit patients in hospital as supplement to medical care if appropriate to collaborative agreement.
  • Attends staff meetings and mandatory in-services.
  • Participates in continuing education opportunities and maintains licensure.
  • Maintains necessary certification(s) and licensure(s).
  • Contributes to the quality of patient care and participates in quality improvement initiatives.


OTHER DUTIES:

Performs other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program. Current licensure in the State of Illinois for practice as a Nurse Practitioner. Adheres to the guidelines as established by the State of Illinois in the Nurse Practice Act. Current CPR certification through AHA. Must take EPIC training and successfully pass required tests.


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Knowledge of physician assisting processes and the ability and willingness to demonstrate and maintain clinical competency (cognitive knowledge and technical skills) as required for the limit of assignment. Ability and willingness to work with patients’ growth and development needs, particularly to patients diagnosed with cancer (newly diagnosed, receiving treatment and terminal care) or immunosuppressed. Ability to manage a sometimes demanding and fast-paced work environment related to changing patient needs, including work with patients with acute, chronic, and complex disease processes and those who are dying. Verbal and written English communication skills for safe and effective patient care and to meet documentation standards. Must be organized, be able to multi-task and have good interpersonal skills. Understands and practices patient confidentiality and follows HIPAA and CCSI/POMS policies. A positive attitude towards health care team members and diverse patient populations.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF JOB:
Standing, walking, sitting, carrying, pushing, pulling, balancing, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, twisting, reaching, handling, kneeling, and wrist and digital dexterity. Must be able to move patient by lifting, ambulating, and transfer of patients in wheelchairs, on gurneys and beds. Speaking, hearing, and visual acuity to perform tests on patients; receive and interpret instructions; hearing to take blood pressure and hear breath, heart, and bowel sounds; chart; and operate equipment. Able to support persons (possibly 200 pounds or more) in emergency situations. Able to move quickly from place to place on occasion. Possible driving.


MENTAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to work under stress and adapt to changing conditions.


WORKING CONDITIONS:
Job duties involve the potential for exposure to blood, body fluids, and chemotherapeutic agents. Normal patient care environment.
