JOB SUMMARY

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is part of CCH’s Executive team and works under the supervision of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in an active leadership role. Directs the Medical Staff and develops policies for the organization's clinical programs. Works closely with hospital staff, department directors, and physicians to ensure that the highest standards of quality and service are maintained. Oversees the implementation of quality improvement efforts designed to improve clinical performance and maintain compliance with HIPAA and other regulations and standards. Evaluate developments and innovations in medical care and make recommendations for new practices and procedures. Advises CEO and medical teams on matters impacting patient care.

The CMO functions at an executive level in an active leadership role with the hospital’s governing body, medical staff leadership, hospital senior leadership and management team. Is directly responsible for directors/managers overseeing departments and other service lines as assigned by the CEO. Is directly responsible for the improvement of the hospital's facilities in assigned areas, including construction or renovation of structures and the purchasing of new equipment. Responsible for department leaders in establishing a measure of performance, increase productivity, quality improvement, cost controls and efficient utilization of facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Responsible for organizational oversight, direction, and evaluation of the Medical Staff.
  • Contributes to clinical expertise to patient care and provides guidance to physicians.
  • Performs administrative duties and risk management.
  • Ensures the highest standards in patient care are maintained.
  • Verifies complex diagnoses and facilitates treatment plans.
  • Hiring, supervising, and mentoring healthcare professionals and collaborating with consultants.
  • Manages allocated budgets and identifies areas of improvement in inpatient care.
  • Keeps informed on advancements in the field.
  • Ensures compliance with healthcare regulations and safety standards.
  • Reports to senior management, as well as liaising between administrative and medical staff.
  • Ensures consistent and accurate medical recordkeeping practices.
  • Ensures that the activities of the Medical Staff are in alignment with CCH mission, vision, and strategic goals.
  • Develops, directs, and monitors quality initiatives and activities of patient care areas, ensuring that services are in accordance with regulatory requirements and federal, state, and local laws. Provides accountability to ensure organizational quality goals are met.
  • Provides leadership and direction regarding improving organizational culture and implementing change.
  • Contributes to the CCH strategic plan.
  • Directs and monitors Medical Staff service excellence goals. In collaboration with Patient and Guest Services, provides accountability to ensure that service initiatives are implemented and goals achieved. Oversees the investigation of complaints of staff, physicians, patients and/or families regarding patient care.
  • Fosters a professional practice environment, facilitating interdisciplinary processes, evidence-based practice, and management and staff engagement.
  • Promotes an environment of collaboration with medical staff and hospital departments to provide for the needs of patients. Advocates for the patient, nursing, or medical staff as appropriate, utilizing the constructive problem-solving process to facilitate resolution. Attends medical staff meetings.
  • Promotes sound fiscal performance by reviewing monthly financial statistics, assures the most efficient staffing models for care delivery, and assisting directors in effective budgeting processes. Provides accountability for meeting efficiency and productivity goals.
  • Implements ongoing leadership development to provide a cadre of highly engaged competent, and qualified medical leaders.
  • Maintains open communication. Provides mentoring and coaching to staff.
  • Provides leadership and direction to Medical Staff.
  • Participates with management and administration in planning for adequate facilities, equipment and supplies influencing the performance of medical care.
  • Provides a weekly report on activities to the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Shares administrator on call responsibilities as assigned.
  • Complies with the hospital’s Corporate Compliance Program including, but not limited to, the Code of Conduct, laws and regulations, and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Must be free from governmental sanctions involving health care and/or financial practices.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education
    • Graduate of an accredited School of Medicine
    • Master’s in Health Administration (MHA) or Business Administration (MBA) preferred.
  • Licensure
    • Current Wyoming license to practice medicine.
  • Certifications required
    • See Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification Policy and Certifications/Education Requirements Policy.
  • Experience
    • Minimum 10 years of clinical experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • The ability to maintain continuing education requirements and all certifications and licenses as required (e.g. ACLS, PALS, CPI, CPR) to maintain professional license.
  • Licensed professionals must strictly adhere to the ethical code of their respective discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of medical operations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with patients, family, staff, hospital management, the board of directors and external stakeholders and communicating sensitive business matters to individuals who have varying levels of comprehension.
  • Able to consistently communicate positively under stress.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and support teamwork.
  • Able to prioritize multiple details simultaneously and trouble-shoot problems.
  • Ability to problem-solve, act decisively, and take effective action with employees, hospital management, vendors, the public, the board of directors, and other external stakeholders.
  • Computer knowledge including ability to operate, type clearly, and operate software applications.
  • Analytical, reasoning, and interpretive skills with a high level of mental concentration and memory.
  • The ability to demonstrate knowledge of developmental stages and apply developmental theories/concepts when planning and implementing care for the appropriate age of the patient. Ability to maintain the appropriate level of knowledge and skills.
  • Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skill in the following age groups:
    • Infant (Neonate to Age 1)
    • Pediatric (Age 1-11)
    • Adolescent (12-18)
    • Adult (19-64)
    • Geriatric (Age 65 and older)
