GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Suicide Prevention Coordinator (SPC) assists with the day-to-day operations of the Center’s Zero Suicide Initiative and the Pathway to Care Initiative. The Pathway to Care initiative is a specialized case management track in Camino Real Mental Health Services for adult and child clients identified with moderate to high suicidal risk including individuals experiencing suicidal thinking/impulses, overwhelming depression, or other mental heath crisis related to safety. The coordinator provides oversight to include coordination of care with the various outpatient offices and crisis staff to ensure individuals receive intensive case management, crisis relapse prevention and suicide-specific interventions including safety planning interventions, Counseling on Access to Lethal Means, Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Suicide Prevention until the client’s crisis in resolved. Teamwork is essential in this position to ensure success with the initiative and positive outcomes for consumers in care. The coordinator may maintain a small caseload of individuals served. The coordinator will create and maintain a safe, calm, and secure environment with supportive care, trauma-informed practices, and recovery-focused, consumer-driven services. The coordinator will be trained in and provide evidence-based services, as well as psychoeducation within their scope of training and expertise. The coordinator is responsible for leading the Zero Suicide Initiative to include organizing and tracking data, organizing related training for staff, and holding monthly meetings. Data collection and reporting is required, and strong organizational skills are a necessity. The coordinator receives direct supervision from the Director of Special Programs. Camino Real operates under a trauma-informed approach based on the six key principles of safety, trustworthiness and transparency, peer support, collaboration and mutuality, empowerment, and choice, and cultural, historical and gender issues.
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications to be eligible for the position:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with a major in (or the equivalent to a major, i.e., 24 hours of course work) in psychology, social work, medicine, nursing, rehabilitation, counseling, sociology, human growth and development, physician assistant, gerontology, special education, educational psychology, early childhood education, or early childhood intervention, OR a registered nurse. Must meet QMHP qualifications. Must have 5 years of experience working with a community mental health center or similar organization serving individuals with behavioral health issues.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in a direct caseworker/case manager position.
  • Must possess good computer skills.

PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Five (5) years of work experience in case management or field related to the position’s duties at a community mental health center.
  • Work experience in a health care/clinic environment.
  • One (1) year of experience working with individuals with mental illness and/or dual diagnosis in a community setter.
  • English/Spanish skills; demonstrated ability to read, write, and speak English and Spanish.
  • Master’s degree.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of local community resources, how to access those services and use them effectively.
  • Ability to make appropriate referrals and linkages and ability to recognize barriers and coordination issues between service systems.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, techniques and practices of social work and chemical dependency, the functioning of mental health hospitals and/or out-patient mental health clinics and schools.
  • Knowledge of mental disorders and DSM criteria.
  • Working knowledge of evidenced-based therapy models.
  • Basic knowledge of Trauma-Informed Care model.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with other professionals, individuals and groups, exercise tact, initiative, and good judgment when dealing with people, prepare reports and recommendations for administrative use.
  • Self-motivated with good time management skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Mature problem solving and self-directed approach to daily work.
  • Ability to accept responsibility and exercise independent judgment in making decisions.
  • Ability to express self clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Requires ability to work within a team approach.
  • Requires proficiency with computer skills, programs, and email.
  • Must have ability to work under conditions requiring physical stamina and ability to work in a stressful environment.
