BAILIFF

Salary: 115 - $ 39,562.00 minimum salary.

Purpose of Classification

Performs law enforcement work in support of assigned court or security function. Duties include protecting life and property, preparing and maintaining court records, serving court records and enforcing rules. Positions in this class perform routine law enforcement and identify needed corrective actions to resolve discrepancies; answer questions; and maintain documents and records.

Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Maintains safety and security of the Judge and staff; maintains order and security for all in attendance in the courtroom; coordinating jail docket with jail or detention center.

Assists the Judge and/or Juvenile Referee in administering courtroom procedure; picks up and delivers all incoming and outgoing mail for court; assists in attending to needs of jurors during deliberations.

Assists with pulling and carrying court files; screens incoming calls and visitors; takes defendants into custody as needed; observes behavior and movement to prevent or stop physical conflict.

Maintains records for the court, and provides information upon request about scheduled court proceedings; assists the Judge and/or Court Referee in maintaining the court's calendar and docket.

Responds to questions from bail bondsmen that request dispositions on criminal or civil cases; keeps track of defendants that fail to appear for court setting and locates them; transports inmates and their paperwork.

Pages attorneys and defendants who are not in the courtroom when docket called; instructs spectators, prospective jurors, and jurors regarding their conduct in the courtroom.

Provides assistance and information to employees, managers, vendors, citizens, local businesses, and/or and other interested parties regarding court functions; serves as liaison between supervisors, vendors, and other departments in regards to the court. Explains policies and procedures.

Additional Functions

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) year of experience performing as a peace officer, law enforcement and/or safety support work in the field of public relations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Basic Peace Officer certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) is required. Must have a valid Texas Driver's License. Must currently possess, or obtain within one (1) year of employment, the Court Security Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.

ADA Compliance

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert medium physical effort in medium work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of heavy weight (50 - 100 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion at a keyboard or work station.

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

This is not a Civil Service covered position.
