Cambridge Public Schools is Hiring a Kindergarten Ola Teacher (English/Portuguese), SY 24-25 Near Cambridge, MA

Position: Kindergarten Teacher, Ola Program (Portuguese/English)

King Open School

King Open School Community:

King Open School is committed to multi-cultural diversity and parent involvement both in and outside the classroom. The curriculum is developed to respond to children’s interest, strengths, needs and individual learning styles. Teachers must be committed to learning how we as teachers may recognize and build on the capabilities of each individual child and each classroom of children. Our Olå Program is a Portuguese-English, two-way bilingual program. Students receive instruction in both English and Portuguese. Half of the day is devoted to English instruction. The second half is devoted to Portuguese instruction. Students are taught in single (occasionally mixed) grade cohorts. Students receive instruction promoting their bilingual and bicultural skills.

The Opportunity:

In collaboration with the kindergarten teaching team and the Olå Program teaching staff, the kindergarten Olå Teacher will provide a creative physical environment in which children are encouraged to make choices and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. In addition, the kindergarten Olå teacher will have demonstrated excellence in the following areas: bilingual/bicultural proficiency; literacy, math, science and social studies skills development, support for all learners, using inclusion techniques and philosophies, use of a variety of learning approaches, activity-centered projects, and the development of an ongoing multicultural curriculum. The teacher will provide creative approaches to the development of basic skills in coordination with our Literacy and Math Coach; develop a system of instruction which encourages children to work well together; work in coordination with special education staff to support the inclusion of special needs students in the regular education classroom; and work cooperatively with other staff in the area of curriculum planning. The kindergarten Olå teacher will maintain a detailed system of record keeping that includes information on individual children’s academic, social and emotional growth. In all interactions with the children, the teacher will provide a safe, nurturing environment with clear expectations, and opportunities for children to make choices and engage in classroom activities. Other related duties as assigned.

Your Skill Set:

As the incoming Kindergarten Ola Teacher you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university required, Master’s preferred.
  • Fluency in the Portuguese Language is required.
  • Previous experience working with elementary age children, especially in an urban, multicultural setting.
  • Respect for differences in the development of children.
  • Ability to work with children in both small and large groups in an activity-based classroom setting.
  • Massachusetts’s certification in Elementary Education required.
