Position Overview:

The Upper School Music Teacher is expected to faithfully employ his/her God-given gifts (rf.
Romans 12:7) to contribute to the mission of Calvin Christian School:

The mission of Calvin Christian School, in cooperation with the home and church, is
to teach the whole child from a biblical worldview, founded in the Reformation,
providing children from Christian families with an excellent education for a life of
Christ-centered service.

We are looking for a creative, talented, and experienced teacher who knows his/her call by

their Lord & Savior Jesus Christ to serve as a full-time Christian music educator in grades 6-12

as well as 5th grade band. The successful candidate for this position is someone who loves

God’s special gift of music both as a musician and as a teacher of music. In addition, there is

evidence of a robust commitment to whole-person, liberal arts education with the ability to

articulate a solid understanding of a Gospel-centered (reformed) educational classroom,

stemming from clear evidence of a maturing Christian faith. In line with our mission, and of

course Scripture (rf. Psalm 19, Romans 1), we are looking for a teacher who sees the music

classroom as God’s mission-field, to challenge, shepherd and love students the way Christ

loves us.

Additionally, the successful candidate for this position will provide evidence for the ways in

which he/she will contribute constructively to a talented team of colleagues, including

working closely with the elementary music teacher on the on-going work of vertically aligning

the music education curriculum.

Salary Range: $48,000 - $77,000

Other benefits: Teachers are expected to enroll their school-age children at Calvin
Christian School, as such there is generous tuition support

Spiritual Requirements:
As a Christian School, we require our employees to be a professing believer and follower

of Jesus Christ as his/her Lord and Savior.
  • Per Calvin’s mission (and constitution), teachers are expected to be members in good

standing at a confessionally reformed church (e.g. URC, CRC, PCA, RCA, OPC) and
in-line with Calvin Christian School’s Mission Statement, Statement of Faith and school
biblical ethics policies.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in relevant field of study
  • Experience working with youth, specifically in a teaching setting
  • Computer proficiency skills
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications:
5 years or more of full-time classroom teaching experience preferred (and completion

of a teaching credential program optional)
  • Master’s degree in related field
  • Desire to live and work in North County San Diego, CA

General Teacher Job Expectations of US Classroom Music Teacher:

  • Gospel-centered Christian faith central to how teacher views all of life, especially the
“art” of working with image bearers in their music education journey.
  • The teacher vividly displays to his/her students being an authentic, lifetime lover &
learner of music, as well as all that is Good, True and Beautiful.
  • Cast vision and build upon a 5-12 music program (including interest in an honor
choir/instrument program within the larger program that inspires peers in music and
blesses families and community)
  • Build partnership with tutors from the community who can compliment the
teacher’s ability to train musicians, i.e. woodwinds, brass, percussion
  • Work with the Elementary Music teacher to shape the K-12 music program through
annual curricular assessment and performance and informance planning
  • Lead music in weekly chapel with the Praise Club
  • Lead music at annual upper school retreats
  • Advisor to Praise Club

Enjoys inspiring students by:

  • Providing choral and band direction
  • Assessing student progress for music excellence
  • Loving learning and sharing the history of music
  • Challenging students individually and collectively in sharpening their craft
(whether student is a beginner or becoming an accomplished musician)

student learning (including evidence of time practicing)

assignments, keeping records up-to-date via LMS.

  • Professionalism - decorum and a sincere learner (e.g. personal educational
growth goals in line with maturing as a dynamic educator in a “whole-child”
liberal arts educational community); constructive, thoughtful and loving
colleague; contemplative and charitable in conversation.
  • Yearning for growth and maturity in Christian faith and living the Christian life
(e.g. Living Romans 12 - personal habits of daily devotion, prayer, Scripture
memorization and reflection)

Physical Demands:

The working conditions and physical demands of this position will be those that must be

met to successfully perform the essential duties of the position. Reasonable

accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the

essential duties. The physical environment the incumbent will work in is typically a school

environment with moderate noise levels that would be expected in that type of work

environment. Outdoor and indoor supervision of playgrounds / workplace for on-going

periods occurs regularly. Lift and carry at least 45 lbs or more. The individual must be able

to work with children at their eye level and always maintain visual supervision of children,

as well as hear, communicate, and comprehend effectively with children, staff, and parents.

The individual also must be able to walk, sit, kneel, crawl, carry, push, pull and participate in

activities indoors and outdoors as needed in an environment with children and adults.
