P osition Overview:

T he Upper School Student Life Director i s expected to faithfully employ his/her
God-given gifts (i.e. Romans 12:7) to contribute to the mission of Calvin Christian
School:

The mission of Calvin Christian School, in cooperation with the home and
c hurch, is to teach the whole child from a biblical worldview, founded in the
Reformation, providing children from Christian families with an excellent
e ducation for a life of Christ-centered service.

The HS Director of Student Life position is a unique role on campus. We are looking

f or a creative, talented and energetic person who senses a call by their Lord & Savior

Jesus Christ to serve in this role where he/she will advise and shepherd the high

school student leaders as they seek to foster a vibrant, God-honoring, fun and

meaningful student culture. The successful candidate will be able to articulate a

vision of how he/she would thrive in this role explained in the full job description

below.

Salary Range: $48,000 - $77,000 (@ 50%FTE)

Benefits Offered: none - benefits begin at 80% FTE positions

Other benefits: Teachers are required to enroll their school-age children at Calvin
Christian School, as such there is generous tuition support.

Spiritual Requirements: As a Christian School, we require our employees to be a professing believer

and follower of Jesus Christ as his/her Lord and Savior.
  • Per Calvin’s mission (and constitution), teachers are expected to be members

in good standing at a confessionally reformed church ( e.g. URC, CRC, PCA,
RCA, OPC) and in-line with Calvin Christian School’s Mission Statement,
Statement of Faith and school biblical ethics policies.

F ull High School Director of Student Life Job Description:
The primary responsibility of the Director of Student Life (DSL) in the High School
is to develop, refresh and maintain an ever-current set of metrics to assess the
health of vibrant student life across all aspects of the overall high school
experience for students. These metrics will come from being engaged in healthy,
constructive relationships with students (and staff), helping students achieve
their goals for building a joyful, constructive campus ethos.

The Director of Student Life has three major areas of responsibility:

1. S tudent Council Advisor & House Governor/Governess :
T he Student Council is comprised of one leader from each of the six
campus Houses in the House Covenant Community , all of whom will be
selected via a rigorous application process which the DSL will oversee each
spring. There will also be one representative from each class (selected by a
vote in the respective classes; elections will also be managed by the DSL).
Thus, there will be 16 student leaders representing the entire high school
student body.

T he DSL will hold a weekly Student Leadership Council meeting run by a
modified form of Robert’s Rules of Order (i.e. meetings will be agendized
and minutes kept, etc). Please see the by-laws for Student Leadership
Council & House Governance.

Since the DSL will oversee all six Houses, not one particular House, the
primary role of the DSL will be the development of leadership of the
student council team. The DSL is expected to train-up student leaders:

  • Manage and update House Scoreboard and scoring
  • Via Biblical discipleship, where the SCHA consistently prays for the

student council and forges a healthy relationship with each student
b y being approachable and an advocate

  • Through an ever-present positive example
  • Via insatiable patience in allowing student leaders to try and fail
  • By supporting student leaders ideas and efforts, but not doing for
them
  • Using consistent and clear communication (i.e. Weekly Student

Council meetings should be agendized and minutes take according
t o Robert’s Rules of Order and this clear communication and
orderliness should continue into the individual House meetings)

2. C o-Curricular Program Development:
This role involves overseeing and managing all student Clubs, supporting
and participating in service opportunities (especially those inspired by the
Student Council). This role also includes helping inspire lunch intramural
activities, often sourced with Clubs.

G eneral HS Director of Student Life Job Description

  • P lanning, executing Student Life events with Student Government
  • Communication with Faculty regarding events and responsibilities
  • Annual curriculum and lesson planning
  • Developmentally appropriate, creative and efficacious pedagogy
  • Subject-matter mastery (leadership training)

P hysical Demands:

The working conditions and physical demands of this position will be those that

m ust be met to successfully perform the essential duties of the position.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities

to perform the essential duties. The physical environment the incumbent will

w ork in is typically a school environment with moderate noise levels that would

be expected in that type of work environment. Outdoor and indoor supervision of

p laygrounds / workplace for on-going periods occurs regularly. Lift and carry at

l east 45 lbs or more. The individual must be able to work with children at their eye

level and always maintain visual supervision of children, as well as hear,

c ommunicate, and comprehend effectively with children, staff, and parents. The

individual also must be able to walk, sit, kneel, crawl, carry, push, pull and

participate in activities indoors and outdoors as needed in an environment with

c hildren and adults.
