Salary: $25,000-$40,000

TITLE: BAND, CHOIR AND MUSIC TEACHER

CLASSIFICATION : PART-TIME, EXEMPT

REPORTS TO: HEAD OF ACADEMICS 

DEPARTMENT: TEACHER 

Overview of Position:

The Christian school teacher’s role is to help students learn Christian concepts in all areas of curriculum matter and to help them internalize the subject matter, skills, and attitudes that will prepare them for Christian leadership. They energetically serve the mission, vision, and philosophy of Calvin Christian School. Christian school teachers find satisfaction in the passionate promotion of excellence in Christian education, helping to produce students who are prepared academically and with a robust biblical worldview. 

The Christian school teacher should be a college graduate from a 4-year accredited university, either a certified teacher in the State of Illinois (or a commitment to begin the process of a certified teacher within 1 school year), evaluated by the administration to be capable of giving effective instruction to students at the assigned grade and subject level and called of God to the Christian school teaching profession. 

This position includes teaching PK-5th grade general music, 6th-8th grade choir, 5th-8th band, and a 3rd-5th grade elective after school chorus.

The following expectations for teachers at Calvin Christian School.

In faithful living one is expected to:

  • Model biblical principles in making choices.
  • Be humble in spirit but bold in Christ-like practice.
  • Be conscientious and responsible.

In instructional planning one is expected to:

  • Select and use curricular materials and plan teaching-learning experiences that help each student achieve the stated objectives.
  • Plan units that help students see wholeness and relevance in learning.
  • Plan lessons that connect biblical principles to concepts about God's world.
  • Plan various teaching strategies to match the students' learning styles.
  • Choose content that helps students see the variety and the integrity of God's creation.
  • Select the means of assessment to measure students' learning for a lesson or unit.

In teaching a class one is expected to:

  • Engage students' attention.
  • Listen carefully to students' ideas and apply them to the lesson.
  • Show interest and wonder in all learning.
  • Connect what students are learning to what they have already learned.

In relating with students one is expected to:

  • Establish a climate of love and care.
  • Define responsible Christian behavior for students.
  • Help students learn self-discipline through appropriate encouragement, correction, and counseling.
  • Help students support and learn from each other.

In professional growth one is expected to:

  • Take responsibility for all tasks related to the classroom, parent communication, and, to some extent, the broader school community.
  • Keep current in scholarship on teaching, the purposes of Christian education, and your subject area.
  • Work constructively with colleagues and administration by contributing ideas and listening to the ideas of others.
  • Articulate in writing and speaking how your Christian faith integrates with your teaching.

In community relations one is expected to:

  • Communicate regularly with parents about their child's progress and needs.
  • Participate actively in the community, especially the church community.
  • Model love for Christ and students beyond the school day and campus.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required. 

Experience

  • Professional Educator License (preferred).
  • Experience working in a school and with children. 

Required Spiritual Qualifications 

  • Must have and profess a personal and mature commitment to faith in Jesus Christ and affirm the school’s statement of faith/basis of instruction and mission statement. 
  • Must believe, without reservation, and actively support the school’s Statement of Faith, Foundational Beliefs, and mission statement; possess a strong, clear Christian testimony; demonstrate a mature, godly spirit as a person of faith and prayer.

Supervisory Responsibility

None

Required Hours

25-30 hours per week. 

Physical Requirements

  • Sit and stand for long periods of time.
  • Speak clearly so listeners can understand.
  • Must be able to work in a demanding work environment.
  • The employee is regularly required to sit, walk, talk, read, see and hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to type, handle, or feel and reach. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a typical classroom environment. Must be able to work in an open room setting with moderate noise levels.
