The Department of Communication and Media Studies at California State University seeks a part-time lecturer for Fall 2024 to teach MDIA 456: Media and Pop Culture. Salary is commensurate with credentials and experience. MDIA 456 is an upper-division course.

Course Description:

Introduces theories and perspectives on the study of media and popular culture in the United States. Examines how media, pop culture, and systems of power contribute to representations of race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, and other related categories within the context of social, political, and economic realities in the United States. Analyzes a variety of pop culture artifacts to detect the role media play within constructing our understanding of popular culture and its impact in our lives.

Minimum qualifications:

• ABD in Communication/Media Studies or closely related field;
• Experience with and demonstrated effectiveness with in-person classroom instruction and with Learning Management Systems such as Canvas, Moodle, or Blackboard;
• Per the California State University’s Out-of-State Employment Policy, the CSU is prohibited from hiring employees to perform CSU-related work outside California. Working in the State of California is a condition of employment.

Preferred qualifications:

• A doctorate in Communication/Media Studies or closely related field;
• Pertinent expertise to teach courses in our Communication/Media Studies programs
• Higher education teaching experience with minimum of 1 year as teacher of record pertinent to subject area
• Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and/or intercultural competence with diverse groups in relation to teaching.

Salary commensurate with degree level and experience

• Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $5,007 - $8,000 per full-time month
• CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,007 - $12,594 per full-time month
