The First-Year Experience Coordinator is responsible for the overall implementation and coordination of first year experience programming. Directly reporting to the Director, Orientation and Transition Programs, this position will coordinate, manage, and implement programs, initiatives, and experiences that facilitate successful new student transitions and integration into the college campus environment.
Major duties and responsibilities.
Program Development and Coordination:
  • Implement university first year experience programs for all first-year students aimed at the successful transition of newly admitted students through their first year at CSUSB.
  • Coordinate all aspects of program development including development, planning, marketing, budget, execution, staffing, risk assessment and program assessment and evaluation.
  • Design specific programing and support for first-generation college students to support the specific needs of first-generation students.
  • Work with academic colleges and services, academic advising centers, peer mentoring and student affairs departments to intentionally connect first year experience programs to department, division, and university strategic plans and learning outcomes.
  • Coordinate academic success recognition celebrations, New Student Convocation, Ask Me Campaign, I'm First Campaign, Re-Connect programs.
First Generation Student Programing & Support
  • Develop and implement student focused programs and services that create and expand the support of first-generation student success at CSUSB.
  • Promote opportunities for first- generation student experiences with academic colleges / departments, campus resources, services, and programs with the intent of support the needs of solving first-generation students.
  • Maintain ongoing knowledge of information relevant to the campus regarding first generation students, including but is not limited to: Benchmarking programs and services, identifying trends in literature, and advocacy as relevant and appropriate to aid in first generation student success.
First Year Experience Development & Collaboration:
  • Builds and strengthens relationships with the university to provide a comprehensive first year experience for all first-year students aligned with the university strategic plan and department vision, mission, and goals.
  • Collaborate with orientation to ensure a seamless transition and increase retention and pathways to completion for first year students
  • Collaborate with key campus partners (Mentoring program, CAPS, Transfer Student Success, ASI, Student Engagement, etc.) to develop initiatives that affect the success, retention, and graduation of our first-year students, with special attention to the needs of first-generation college students and their parents & families.
  • Support Parent and Family engagement to encourage the successful transition of first year students and their transition.
  • Collaborate with unite areas (Orientation, Transfer Success Center, Campus Tours & Visits Center, and the Palm Desert Campus) on the construction and administration of communication plans and assists in editing communications for first year students. In addition, collaborate with Strategic Communication staff in the development of strategic and targeted marketing materials that are consistent with the University's brand.
Program Marketing:
  • Create marketing materials for First Year Experience program and maintain updated and accurate information on the Orientation and First Year Experience website.
  • Develop and maintain social media accounts.
Assessment and Resource Allocation:
  • In collaboration with the Senor Lead Coordinator for First Year Experience, develop and implement a needs assessment process to assess first year student learning outcomes and impact of first year experience programs.
  • Create a management plan, data collection and analysis to ensure the continual improvement of First Year Experience innovative, data-informed strategies and compile annual reports.
  • Manage budget process and based on assessments allocate program resources appropriately. Submit annual budget request for the successful execution of First Year Experience programming needs.
  • Maintain up-to-date files, written reports and job-related data.
  • In collaboration with the Office of Institution Research, track student transition programming attendance data, retention statistics, write reports regarding program success and impact for submission to director.
Other Duties as Assigned:
  • Maintain professional standards of practice through participation and involvement in continuing education activities as well as general understanding of CSUSB's colleges and majors.
  • Provide thoughtful and dedicated support for other CSUSB transition programming and/or campus-wide events and initiatives as directed.
  • Serve as department and divisional representative; attend and/or chair departmental, divisional and university committees.
Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
  • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. (Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
  • Experience: Equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of a competence and indicate the potential for further growth. (A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.)
Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned.
  • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
  • General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
  • Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
  • Ability to obtain factual and interpretive information through interviews.
  • Ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentation based on these data.
  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required;
  • Ability to recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas.
  • A background check (which may include: fingerprinting, checks of employment records, education records, criminal records, civil records, motor vehicle records, professional licenses, and sex offender registries, as position requires) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can begin employment with the CSU.
  • Strong experience in First Year Experience and transition programs.
  • Knowledge of working at a public institution of Higher Education.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff, students, faculty, parents, and guests.
  • Ability to translate student development, leadership theory, and research into practice.
  • Ability to advise student groups and facilitate group development.
  • Ability to plan and implement programs linked to student learning outcomes.
  • Experience maintaining and tracking administrative paperwork.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse student and staff population.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of contract development, negotiations and execution.
  • Event planning skills including designing, marketing, implementing, and assessing impact.
  • Ability to work autonomously and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to analyze situations and develop solutions.
  • Experience supervising and evaluating student staff.
  • Ability to design and present student staff training and development
Preferred Qualifications
  • A Master's degree highly preferred from an accredited university,
  • A minimum of one years of relevant post-bachelors experience with first year experience / transition / orientation program development, and supervising or advising student staff required.
  • An understanding of student development and transition theory.
  • Experience with program planning and outcomes assessment and analysis is preferred
  • Experience with budget and resource allocation is preferred.
  • Experience with student supervision, training, and development.
Compensation and Benefits:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,610 per month
Classification Salary Range: $4,610 - $6,556 per month
The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 14 paid holidays a year.
