The Athletics Communications & Strategic Marketing Specialist is responsible for coordinating digital and creative content, communications, brand management, and ensuring integration with marketing and game-day operations staff. Utilizes knowledge and skills to increase recruitment efforts, fan engagement, and revenue generation through creating video and graphic content, compelling stories, and marketing and promotional strategies while adhering to the CSUSB athletics brand.
Major duties and responsibilities:
  • Establish and maintain positive and professional relationships, as well as serve as the department's liaison for information and communications contact, including but not limited to local, regional, and national media outlets.
  • Coordinate and maintain the CSUSB Athletics Website including but not limited to the creation of season previews, game recaps, storytelling, and human-interest stories.
  • Serve as the archivist for statistical and historical records.
  • Provide lead work direction of student paraprofessionals, including but not limited to statistics, video production, digital media, content creation, and broadcast.
  • Facilitate, recommend, and implement strategic and long-term communications policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate department audio and video production.
  • Provide staff with vision for content creation, production, and execution of communications and marketing strategies for all sports programs.
  • Coordinate student-athlete nominations for university, CCAA conference, NCAA, and national awards and honors.
  • Branding and licensing for the department.
  • Assist with execution of ticket sales and strategies.
  • Recruitment and lead for sport specific game day media operations for all home intercollegiate athletics and championship events.
  • Primary contact for all departmental communication, including but not limited to conference and national office athletics communications.
  • Determines appropriate budget expenditures relative to the implementation of marketing/promotion and communication plans.
  • Authorizes dissemination of all internal and external marketing and promotional materials.
  • Other job related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
Entry to the first level within this classification requires knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, and/or some exposure to marketing and marketing research. This background normally is obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and up to two years of related professional or technical experience. In addition, strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles are essential to initial entry to this classification.
Required Qualifications
In addition to Position Skill Level I and II knowledge and skill requirements, work assignments typically require:
  • Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of communication, public affairs, media and/or marketing theories and concepts in order to develop and execute communication strategies and plans to promote and position the university.
  • Expert knowledge of university communication objectives and ability to translate them into effective communication and media campaigns.
  • Ability to understand issues from a broad, strategic perspective.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable copyright and other laws pertaining to publications and the news media.
  • Ability to effectively manage media relations and apply effective media strategies and techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to market story concepts to university officials and media outlets.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of marketing and research techniques and methods. Ability to use market research to enhance the impact of communication strategies and campaigns.
  • Working knowledge of appropriate use of statistical techniques.
  • Expert networking and interpersonal skills including strong consultative and persuasive skills to work with internal and external constituents and the media.
  • Expert writing and editorial skills.
Demonstrated organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with NCAA student-athlete and game day/fan experience
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Has knowledge and understanding of NCAA rules with CCAA modifications for sponsored sports.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to all university, CCAA, and NCAA compliance rules.
  • Champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as participate in maintaining a respectful, positive work environment.
  • Familiarity with Adobe, Photoshop, PremierPro, or InDesign programs.
  • Knowledge of NCAA Live Stats and Stat Crew.
  • Must be able to work with considerable independence and significant creativity and initiative.
  • Ability to work with students, coaches, and administrators in a wide variety of situations, in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Team-oriented individual with a willingness to take initiative and a desire to work in collegiate athletics.
Special Conditions:
Must be available for occasional travel, and be willing to work extended and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
Compensation and Benefits:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5417 - $6250 per month
Classification Salary Range: $4391 - $7945 per month
The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 14 paid holidays a year. Position Information:
Work status: Full-time/Exempt/Probationary
Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.
Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.
