The GAAP Accountant II shall possess a thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. This position requires the application of the theories, principles, and practices of the accounting profession. In addition, this position will examine financial documents/reports for completeness, accuracy, and conformance with GAAP, SAM, and established University policies and procedures. This position will analyze transactions from various systems and processes with the emphasis on improved efficiency.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Assists in the preparation of the University's financial reporting to the State Controller's Office, Chancellor's Office, and other outside entities.
  • Processes and creates schedules/reconciliations required by annual audit or upcoming GASB/FASB reporting requirements.
  • The financial reporting and audit responsibilities are including, but not limited to: GAAP audit reporting packages, audit PBC schedules and adjustments, GAAP derivation process, GAAP/Auxiliary FIRMS Reporting, related-party transactions between campus and auxiliaries.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the University's chart of accounts for all business units (campus and Auxiliaries).
  • Provide recommendations and resolve errors associated with legal edits to make sure the COA follows the guidance from Chancellor's Office for year-end close and systemwide consolidation.
  • Add/maintain/inactivate chart fields per department's requests.
  • Regular chart of accounts and combination rules maintenance, budget and PO roll forward processes.
  • General ledger month-end/year-end closing processes
  • COA subject matter expert for all business unit
  • Participate in GASB/FASB standards implementations for campus and Auxiliaries, as well as other accounting projects as needed.
  • Leases standard implementation
  • System application improvements, such as COA requests
  • Accounting forms revisions
  • Accounting website restructure and upgrades
  • Other ad-hoc projects
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with federal and state tax rules and regulations and promoting awareness of tax issues within the University including the review of federal and state tax issues, new laws and regulations, and current court outcomes.
  • Campus Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT) research
  • Annual UBIT package submission to Chancellor's Office
  • Other tax research or implementations for campus and Auxiliaries
  • Other duties assigned by Associate Controller or University Controller.
Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
  • Education: Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with a major in accounting, business administration, finance or a closely related field OR a combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
  • Experience: Equivalent to two years of professional level accounting experience.
Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); office methods and procedures; statistical and mathematical presentation of data; advanced proficiency with current word processing and spreadsheet software programs, web browsers, query tools, integrated financial systems and/or other types of records management systems. General understanding of internal control methods. Working knowledge of federal student financial aid annual reporting requirements, and quarterly grant reporting requirements.
  • Abilities: Ability to apply accounting principles to the analysis of complex accounting problems; analyze and interpret accounting data; prepare clear, accurate financial statements and reports; utilize problem-solving techniques in finding solutions to complex accounting problems; understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and principles; make decisions and recommendations regarding accounting activities; communicate effectively with others inside and outside the unit, including conveying technical information to non-Accountants.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with audits, developing and implementing internal controls.
  • CSU accounting and reporting experience.
  • Previous experience in higher education.
Compensation and Benefits:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,452 - $6,083 per month
Classification Salary Range: $4,452 - $8,592 per month
The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 14 paid holidays a year. Position Information:
Work status: Full-time/Exempt/Probationary
Schedule: Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.
