PURPOSE:
Under the general supervision of the Associate Director for Admissions & Recruitment, the Admissions Counselor performs moderately complex student services professional work in support of student outreach and recruitment programs, diversity targeted recruitment events and programs, general admissions office events and services. Primary duties include: planning and delivering presentations at on-campus and off-campus functions for general student recruitment and diversity targeted recruitment, representing the university at college fairs throughout California, and providing counseling and detailed information to potential high school and community college students. The Admissions Counselor makes determinations regarding eligibility for admissions and recommends educational goals and admissions requirements to potential students, assists denied students with transfer information from their local community colleges, prepares reports, ensures timely communication to applicants, and carries out day-to-day assignments that affect CSUMB enrollment goals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Develops, schedules Plans, coordinates, and executes targeted recruitment and outreach efforts for students, including events. Represents the university at various local and national outreach/recruiting events; coordinates the annual calling campaigns for admitted students and families. Serves on various recruiting/retention committees dedicated specifically to the recruitment of African American students and communities. coordinates, and executes recruitment and outreach events, programs, and campus tours to increase full-time enrollment goals and increase affinity recruitment events. Maintains a prospect list, prepares statistical reports for student recruitment and retention, and utilizes territory reports to follow-up with prospective students. Provides oral presentations to requested schools, communities, employers, and parents. Represents the University at college fairs throughout California and at the CSU Statewide Counselor's Conferences. Provides information for website updates, development and dissemination of materials and messaging. Develops and participates in the email, chat, social networking and tele-counseling campaigns to follow-up with students. Maintains CSUMB presence in the community colleges and high schools with emphasis on the local Tri-County area.
  • Reviews academic credentials to determine admissions eligibility for resident, nonresident native U.S., and athlete applicants. Interprets and explains policies to staff members and provides clarification on policies and procedures to other CSUMB offices and representatives from other colleges and institutions. Identifies issues, reviews and proposes policies, and recommends improvements to the admissions evaluations and processes. Ensures timely communication for applicants throughout the admissions cycle; assists in the development of targeted messages to prospective students.
  • Coordinates and conducts workshops on Admissions, EOP, Residential Housing, Financial Aid information, and other important student-related programs. Provides Admission Counseling appointments. Under the direction of the Assistant Director, serves as a liaison between the Office of Admissions and campus partners such as academic departments or student services departments.
Other Functions:
  • Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Assists in coordinating programs with other campus departments.
  • Assist in campus tour program as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior; procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job- related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of professional experience in areas related to student services programs or in a related field, preferably in Admissions and Recruitment, including experience in maintaining academic records, applying complex rules to daily work, analyzing academic qualifications and granting appropriate credit, and advising prospective students on fulfilling admissions requirements. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Bilingual preferred.
Technical familiarity with Oracle/PeopleSoftor equivalent student information system, Salesforce, Microsoft Office Professional Suite, and Google mail and calendaring programs.

  • This position has been designated as a sensitive position with access to and responsibility for detailed personally identifiable Level 1 confidential information about students, faculty, staff or alumni that is protected, personal or sensitive as defined in the CSU Information Security Data Classification Standards
  • This position is required to comply with confidentiality requirements outlined in the Department of Education's Family Educational Rights and Privacy and California's Educational Code Chapter 13 regarding sensitive student issues.
  • This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and will be required to participate in annual training and to immediately forward to the Clery Director all reports of crimes brought to their attention pursuant to the Clery Act and California State Education Code, Chapter 15.5, of the Donahue Higher Education Act, Section 67380.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class, and be insurable under the University's liability coverage.
  • May require occasional evenings and/or weekend work.
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
