This is a full-time management (MPP) position. MPP employees serve at the pleasure of the campus President. MPPs do not serve a probationary period and never receive permanent status.
This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
Conditions of Employment
Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Major Duties
Under the administrative direction of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the College and works to strengthen degree programs. The Dean assists faculty by mobilizing support, both internally and externally, for their teaching and research activities. The Dean has primary responsibility for fostering and sustaining an environment of academic excellence; overseeing strategic planning and curriculum development; providing leadership in fundraising; and for working effectively with the faculty, staff, and students as well as with the community, industry, and government. The Dean is expected to provide strong and creative leadership in managing the programs of the College; establishing goals and objectives consistent with the University's mission, goals and objectives; in overseeing the recruitment, retention, and graduation of students; and in overseeing the recruitment, retention, and continued development of a high-quality faculty and staff within the context of shared governance.
Qualifications
Required Education: A Ph.D. or an earned terminal degree in one of the disciplines related to the College of Arts and Humanities; verifiable background and qualifications for the appointment at the rank of full Professor in one of the departments/divisions of the College of Arts and Humanities.
Required Experience: A demonstrated record of five years of successful leadership experience at the level of department chair or higher level and evidence of a record of scholarly publications.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge:
Knowledge of the academic structure of a four-year comprehensive university; demonstrated significant and successful administration experience; proven leadership ability; effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; knowledge of and commitment to voluntary national accreditation; strong commitment to inclusivity and diversity and to interaction with the business community; commitment to academic governance; and ability to interact effectively with diverse cultural and ethnic groups. Evidence of fundraising ability is a strong plus. The position provides opportunities for strong visionary leadership.
Ability:

Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with the needs of the visual and performing arts, ethnic studies departments, communications, and the humanities, and an understanding of the specific facility and staffing needs for these fields.
Significant and demonstrated experience in solving a variety of fiscal budgetary, personnel, and management problems in a rapidly changing environment and within a union context.
Documented record of successful generation of external funds and external and internal advocacy, and experience with enrollment management.
Experience securing resources in the arts and humanities, including faculty hires; support for research and creative activities for faculty, staff, and students; space on campus; and funding for the arts.
Experience with student-centered initiatives.
Demonstrated leadership experience and proven commitment to anti-racism, social justice, and gender equity initiatives.
Respects the expertise of the faculty, demonstrates a commitment to and evidence of shared governance, and shows a willingness to engage all constituencies of the college in strategic planning, including a vision for the College.
Proactive in meeting the needs of first-generation students and students from underrepresented populations. Demonstrated experience working with underrepresented faculty and staff.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate programs or initiatives between departments and across the university with other colleges and organizations.
Demonstrated commitment to recruit, retain, and support faculty (tenure-track and non-tenure-track) and staff. Candidates should be able to point to examples of mentoring faculty and staff in terms of professional growth and leadership.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with community organizations; demonstrated consultative and interpersonal competencies; documented record of successful generation of external funds; demonstrated successful management of an information technology environment and alternative modes of instruction; experience with international programs; and a record of successful internal fiscal management.

Responsibilities
50% Oversees the management of the College resources, including the generation of resources from within the University and from external sources, and the equitable allocation of those resources in support of College programs; ensures the College operates within its budget; communicates and implements policy decisions and other announcements from the Chancellor's Office, campus central administration, Academic Affairs and other appropriate offices to faculty, staff and students; reports significant developments and faculty opinions to central administration; provides leadership in curriculum and program development; organizes and schedules classes and programs; coordinates academic support services and supervises and develops academic support personnel; and interacts with students in activities related to academic programs. With the Provost and other University officers, participates in developing University policy and strategic planning.
30% Creates and sustains an environment in which academic excellence is pursued by faculty, staff, colleagues and students; works with the faculty, the Division/Department Chairs and program coordinators in formulating College policies and in determining goals and objectives; strives to improve faculty quality by encouraging and supporting quality in teaching and learning, research, scholarly and creative activity, and community service within a collective bargaining environment; and recommends to the central administration on the appointment of faculty and on their evaluation for retention, tenure and promotion.
10% Spokesperson for the College on the campus, in the larger academic community, and within the greater Los Angeles professional community; seeks broad-based support for the College from external agencies; provides leadership in the area of outreach and student recruitment, including building relationships with local high schools and community colleges; and participates frequently in the public relations efforts of the University and College.
10% Performs other related duties and assignments as required or assigned.
