Under the direction of the Exhibitions Technical Director, Museum Technology Specialists are responsible for updating and retrofitting the technological underpinnings for interactive exhibits. Utilizing a broad array of tools and technology, Museum Technology Specialists diagnose malfunctioning exhibits and restore operation.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS degree in Computer Science or a related field of study preferred.
  • At least 1 year professional experience in developing video games or theme park attractions, special effects technology, software-to-hardware interface applications, robotics, or any combination of experience and training which would indicate potential to perform duties of this position.
  • Previous experience with Network infrastructure and wireless applications.
  • Fluent in at least one programming language such as Python, Java, Unity, MAX/MSP, Unreal Engine or the various versions of C/C . Ability to learn new languages as needed.
  • Ability to re-write code for exhibits to update hardware technology and integrate with new systems
  • Familiarity with multiple operating systems (current versions of MS Windows, Mac OS, Linux)
  • Familiarity with CAD software for mechanical design (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD)
  • Strong knowledge of actuators, control systems, and sensors, including capacitive, ultrasonic and photovoltaic.
  • Hands-on experience in rapid prototyping such as 3D printing, machining, laser-cutting, and CNC lathe
  • Ability to interact with all levels of Museum staff.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work at high elevations utilizing lifts and fall safety equipment.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds and up to 75 pounds on occasion, kneel, bend, crouch, squat, and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes evenings, weekends and holidays as required.
  • Ability to occasionally travel to other venues for exhibit installations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Diagnoses museum guest user interface issues
  • Updates exhibit software to ensure compatibility with new operating systems, hardware, environmental factors
  • Ensures aesthetic quality and educational intent is preserved
  • Traces network outages/failures. Collaborates with IT staff to restore connectivity and operation.
  • Manages content onsite and in cloud storage
  • Performs diagnostics onsite and remotely
  • Documents and inventories existing exhibit software as well as software changes including producing schematics, manuals, and user guides
  • Advises on the feasibility, maintenance, and support requirements of proposed exhibit designs
  • Reports on exhibit downtime, status and restoration timeline
  • Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast of new trends and innovations.
  • Works with Operations and Exhibit Development staff to evaluate needs for updating or modifying exhibits in the future.
  • Assists Curatorial staff in development and implementation of exhibit goals, objectives, and priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION

Commensurate with experience. $4,583 - $5,416/month
