Job Title: Staff Attorney

The Rural Justice Unit team seeks a Staff Attorney who will work with a team of two community workers to provide legal support to San Joaquin County adults age 60 and over toward remaining independent in their homes and communities, with the goal of protecting and advancing the rights of San Joaquin Countys seniors and adults with removing barriers impacting self-sufficiency, independence, and economic well-being. The team will focus primarily focus housing preservation, public benefits, and healthcare advocacy. Funding for this position is through December 31, 2023, with the expectation that continued funding will be awarded.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work collaboratively with staff to screen qualified seniors and adults to determine the nature of the legal problem/s, and assess and meet the legal needs.
  • Reviews and supervises the work product of Community Workers and Clerical support staff relating to all clients being advised or represented.
  • Counsel, advise and represent clients in legal matters.
  • Counsel, advise, and represent clients in legal matters, including Administrative Law Hearings and court.
  • Research and write pleadings, memoranda, correspondence, and other legal documents.
  • Interview clients. Effectively and efficiently communicate with clients.
  • Meet clients in various settings, such as at home, court, and other community-based settings.
  • Provide advocacy for clients in various settings, including local housing authority, social service offices, and community-based organizations.
  • Work with community groups, conduct outreach and provide community education presentations and materials.
  • Help clients connect with appropriate social services and support, including housing support services, physical and mental health services.
  • Complete administrative tasks, such as those related to grant management, reporting, and client case management.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate case notes and timekeeping in case management system.
  • Willingness to work some evenings and weekend days.
  • Willingness to travel within San Joaquin County.
  • Applicants must have car and car insurance.
  • Additional tasks as assigned by Supervisor.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Admitted to practice law in the State of CA or willing to take the next CA Bar Exam.
  • Strong personal work ethic, initiative, and ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to spot legal issues and comfort with providing real-time counsel & advice.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, client communication skills, and experience working with low-income people and communities
  • A demonstrated ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal, writing, and organizational skills.
  • Proven interest in social justice issues.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE

  • Experience working with the elderly, veterans, adults with disabilities, and/or individuals experiencing a crisis.
  • Experience working or volunteering with social service or non-profit organizations.
  • Aptitude to work under pressure in an empathetic and professional manner.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

Some professional dues are paid by CRLA (Bar Fees) and, if qualified, up to $6,000 law school Loan Reimbursement Assistance Program (LRAP). Generous paid leave policy which includes; 15 days of sick leave, 15 holidays each year, and vacation (accrue 15 days for the first year of service and 20 days after one year of service at CRLA). This is a union position (Legal Service Workers for Rural California "LSWRC" ), and the salary ranges from (Staff Attorney: $65,500-$90,000) depending on each year of admission to practice law in any U.S. jurisdiction and any relevant law-related work experience prior to being admitted to practice law.
