About the Center for Environmental Health:
CEH administers programs that protect and manage food, drugs, and medical devices, including industrial hemp manufacturing; regulate radiation machines/producers and radioactive materials; oversee the disposal of low-level radioactive waste; regulate the generation, handling, and disposal of medical waste; and protect the public from many other environmental health risks. The Center includes the Division of Food and Drug Safety, the Division of Radiation Safety and Environmental Management, the Emergency Preparedness Program, and a team to support the State Environmental Health Director, the Deputy Director (DD) of CEH. CEH has a budget over $100 million and includes over 500 staff dedicated to preventing disease and injury by protecting Californians from environmental health hazards.
The California Department of Public Health is comprised of many Centers and Offices with a total of over 200 unique programs, including environmental health programs housed outside of CEH such as climate change, environmental health investigations, childhood lead poisoning prevention, and vector-borne diseases. CEH also collaborates with other state agencies, federal/national partners, local environmental health entities, and other community partners to address complex environmental public health challenges with inclusive and equity-driven approaches.
