Job Description and Duties

Would you like to be part of a growing and exciting fish hatchery program? Do you have a passion for fish and wildlife, working outdoors, and being in nature? Mojave River Hatchery, based in Victorville, has a great opportunity to gain experience in raising fish and having a fullfilling role of preserving California's fishing population.

This position will learn about and is responsible for supporting the Department's Inland Fisheries Program. Duties include all aspects of working at a large production fish hatchery. Including different fish culture practices ranging from the hatching of Rainbow Trout eggs all the way through to the final stage of stocking of our production of fish to the many waters of Southern California for the benefit and enjoyment of our angling community of all ages. It also includes learning national water sampling protocols, hatchery and grounds upkeep, light equipment maintenance, transporting fish to a variety of waters and more. The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions

Ability to elevate 40 pounds and be capable of handling 50-pound feed and salt bags; get in and out of 4- foot raceways; willingness to work in and around water; work in all weather conditions- wind, rain, extreme heat, cold, and direct sunlight; climb steep banks when necessary; work near waters with uneven terrain an unpredictable flow; ability to climb ladders; open and close various types of valves. Periodically required use of respirators and participation in the Department’s respirator protection program; and other required Personal protective equipment (PPE) and certifications. Willingness to work a flexible schedule, work on weekends and holiday schedules.
