The Facilities Department at California College of the Arts provides oversight, planning, and management of all construction, maintenance, and support services for all campus buildings and grounds to ensure the optimal function and condition of the College's valuable physical assets. Under direction of the Facilities Manager, the General Facilities Technician performs a variety of service, maintenance, and repair work in support of the efficient operation and continual improvement of the College's physical plant. The technician will be required to perform basic and skilled work in maintenance and construction trade areas, provide general operational support, and perform administrative functions. Makers, craft-persons, artists, fabricators, and hands-on problem solvers encouraged to apply.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
Service, Maintenance & Repair - 65% of time
  • Performs a variety of service, maintenance, and repair work in support of the efficient operation and continual maintenance of the College's buildings and grounds including event and operational support and administrative functions.
  • Performs preventative maintenance routine, light construction, and repairs of commercial buildings and grounds including painting, carpentry, mechanical, plumbing, minor electrical, shop machinery, locksmith, and equipment maintenance.
  • Performs some custodial and waste management work in coordination with custodial services as required
  • Addresses maintenance or repair issues, systems, determines scope of work, materials and equipment needed, anticipates next steps, and coordinates with impacted parties.
  • Conducts regular rounds of campus buildings and grounds. Identifies health and safety hazards, maintenance and repair issues, and proactively takes appropriate action to remedy hazards and repair issues including prompt notification of Facilities management.
  • Performs minor classroom and office reconfigurations and renovations including furniture, fixture, and equipment assembly and installation.
  • Maintains safe working environment; adheres to safety procedures including hazard communication and secondary labeling programs; updates and maintains material data sheets (MSDS) and inventories
Customer Service - 15% of time
  • Provides excellent customer service and support. Regularly reviews, prioritizes, coordinates, and promptly responds to work-orders and service requests. Maintains an organized workflow including use of a shared calendar, document management system, Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), and room scheduling system.
Equipment Operation - 10% of time
  • Operates equipment including company truck scissor lift, and forklift, to load, haul and move furniture and equipment and retrieve materials from vendors. Training is required and provided.
Administration & Event/Project Support - 10% of time
  • Provides event support including coordination with vendors and contractors, set-up and breakdown of event furniture, and general event support services.
  • Provides a variety of project support services. Will be assigned specific tasks to support a variety of projects.
  • Performs administrative tasks including requesting and reviewing bids and quotations, ordering and purchasing materials and supplies, and inventory.
  • Attend training and use other tools of professional development to maintain and develop professional skills as needed.
  • Works on other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to demonstrate the experience and/or education in carpentry and 2 or more of the following; mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, locksmith skills or landscaping.
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree desirable.
  • Experience performing a variety of maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Knowledge of building and maintenance materials and applications.
  • Ability to operate and maintain tools and equipment associated with the maintenance and construction trades. Or, relevant experience that supports the ability to master new skills quickly.
  • Knowledge of building systems including 2 or more of the following: mechanical, lighting, life-safety, and commercial electrical and plumbing and basic knowledge of building and maintenance materials and applications; demonstration of genuine interest and capacity to learn.
  • Confidence using technology in your daily workflow for research and ordering.
  • Familiarity using a web based CMMS system and proficiency using a web browser and Google Suite. Mac/Apple proficiency is highly recommended.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in writing well-formulated emails.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, decipher schematics, diagrams and floor plans, and quickly comprehend work-order and task reports.
  • Strong work ethic. Developed organizational and task management ability is essential.
  • Capacity to anticipate needs and problems and respond proactively. Ability to work independently and reliably.
  • Ability to work with faculty, students, and staff in a dynamic, culturally diverse community.
  • Experience working within a design-oriented, higher education, arts-based, or non-profit environment preferred.
  • Commitment to quality of service and sensitivity to diversity.
  • Must possess a valid California driver's license and be insurable as you are required to drive company vehicles as needed.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
  • The compensation for the position is $22.95 per hour.
  • CCA offers a comprehensive benefits package, including the choice of five medical plans, generous holiday, sick & vacation time, a retirement match and tuition remission. CCA covers an average of 91% of the medical plan cost for the employee only and an average of 82% for employees with dependents. WORK SCHEDULE:
  • CCA considers a full-time work week to be 37.5 hours per week.
Please note that in an effort to keep the CCA community safe, the College requires all staff, faculty, and students who are on campus to be fully vaccinated, including to have received a booster shot (if eligible). The job responsibilities of this position will require time regularly spent on campus, and therefore the incumbent will be asked to follow the CCA vaccination requirement, unless an exemption is approved.
