Calcasieu Parish Police Jury is Hiring an ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT Near Sulphur, LA

This is the third of three levels in the Labor and Trades Supervision series.
 
Assists in oversight and management of staff: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff are trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a healthy and safe working environment; monitoring budgets, reviewing program activities; and providing overall program guidance to work crews and crew foremen. and in consultation with Superintendent, making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations. Incumbents do not regularly participate in the tasks of the work crews they supervise.(The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position. Other duties may be assigned.)
 
  • Coordinates and supervises staff to include: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff are trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a healthy and safe working environment; and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
  • Prepares cost estimates for budget recommendations; submits justifications for budget items; monitors and controls expenditures.
  • Assist Superintendent in developing, implementing, and evaluating programs within their area of operations. 
  • Applies policies and procedures; ensures applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, regulations, laws, and policies are complied with. 
  • Oversees initiatives within their area of operations for the enhancement and improvement of service delivery. 
  • Oversees training program.
  • Serves as fleet liaison. 
  • Serves as safety liaison. 
  • Assumes Superintendents duties in their absence.
  • Review performance data to monitor and measure productivity, goal progress, and activity levels their particular area of operations. 
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. 
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises a group of skilled and unskilled workers in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Parish's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Associates Degree, and one of the following:
  • Five to seven years’ experience and management of one crew, with or without call-out duties; or,
  • Three to five years’ experience and management of multiple crews within the department; with call-out duties; or, 
  • an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
  • Valid Driver’s License as per State law or requirement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) depending on position;
KNOWLEDGE
  • Write reports, parish correspondence, and effectively present information to subordinates;
  • Managing projects and programs;
  • Time management and ability to prioritize. workload;
  • Developing, evaluating, recommending, and implementing processes and procedures;
  • Interpreting and applying Federal, State, and local laws and regulations;
  • Supervisory principles;
  • Trades maintenance principles and practices;
  • Recordkeeping principles;
  • Budgeting principles;
  • Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, regulations, codes, and/or statutes;
  • Computers and related software applications.
SKILLS
  • Monitoring and evaluating employees;

  • Interpreting and applying applicable laws, rules, and regulations;
  • Managing labor, trades, construction, and/or repair projects;
  • Using applicable tools and equipment related to area of assignment;
  • Reading blueprints, schematic drawings, and/or construction drawings;

  • Using a computer and related software applications;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, odors, dusts, chemicals, and intense noises.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. 
 
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
