ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY
SUMMARY : Currently searching for one Part-Time Student Assistant to work in the Huntley College of Agriculture USDA NRCS Grant, under the supervision of Dr. Eileen Cullen, Co-Principal Investigator.
ABOUT US : As the largest employer of students on the Cal Poly Pomona campus, the Enterprises offers valuable work experience and hands-on training to approximately 1,500 Cal Poly Pomona students each year. The Enterprises offers positions in various fields; whether it is in the area of technology, science, retail, culinary arts, hospitality1500 management, leadership or research grants, these student employees participate in Cal Poly Pomona's learn-by-doing philosophy and acquire practical skills in their designated field of study.
The Enterprises also contributes operating support to nearly 1,100 Enterprises and scholarship programs every year, including Bronco Athletics and the Pepsi Scholarship. In addition, the Enterprises administers grants and contracts, contributes to campus security, and supports several university publications. The Enterprises contributes over $1 million annually to Cal Poly Pomona.
SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety):
The web and social media assistant will work to promote and report on Huntley College of Agriculture student intern experiences during their respective USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) summer 2024 internships. The student assistant will interview, research, write, and post NRCS and related department and college content on social media platforms including Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, PolyPost student newspaper, and college and department websites:
  • Report on Plant Science Department and Huntley College of Agriculture course based, co-curricular, student clubs, internship and employment opportunities related to USDA NRCS (soil conservation, soil science, engineering, wildlife conservation, environmental quality incentive program (EQUIP) and related programs).
  • Interview, research, photograph, and write social media posts and web articles featuring Huntley College of Agriculture faculty, staff, and student activities in the above areas on campus and with community partners.
  • Maintain weekly contact with NRCS interns from Huntley College of Agriculture during their respective 10-week summer 2024 NRCS field office locations to report and feature their experiences "from the field" through social media and web outlets as described below.
  • Convert the above activities to professionally curated content via Instagram posts, reels, stories, mentions, hashtags, and Linktree resources, LinkedIn, and Facebook, and CPP PolyPost student newspaper articles to reach current and prospective CPP Huntley College of Agriculture Students, and prospective employers and collaborators from government, private industries, and community organization sectors.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Cal Poly Student pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Journalism or related major with emphasis on science communication
  • Working knowledge of Plant and Agricultural Sciences
  • Experience (written and oral) in Science Communication to professional and lay audiences
  • Mastery with social media (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, web content development (web design skills are not part of this position).
  • Excellent English verbal communication and writing skills
  • Responsible and dependable
  • Ability to work well with various people including students, faculty, staff, and high-level administrators
  • Motivated, innovative, and shows initiative
