ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY
SUMMARY: Cal Poly Pomona Enterprises is currently searching for Student Assistants to work as Animal Caretakers for the Animal Care Facilities under the Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Development.
SOME OF THE THINGS YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety):
The Animal Care Facilities Coordinator is seeking an organized, motivated and detail-oriented individual to join the staff of the Animal Care Facility. Under the supervision of the Associate Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Economic Development and under the day-to-day supervision of the Animal Care Facilities Coordinator, the Student Assistant is responsible for the following primary duties:
- Supports the overall daily operations of the Animal Care Facility.
- Monitor the laboratory environment by recording temperature and humidity of rooms and reporting any abnormal findings to the Animal Care Facilities Coordinator
- Complete detailed animal observations for signs of illness and abnormal behavior and reporting any findings to the Animal Care Facilities Coordinator
- Provide detailed and proper husbandry procedures for animals. Provide proper housing, feed, bedding, environmental enrichment and water for mice, rats, rabbits and chickens.
- Housing preparation and changing for Immunocompromised and Biosafety Level 2 mice and chickens, rats and rabbits.
- Disinfection and sanitation of animal racks, carts, animal equipment such as water bottles, caging and environmental enrichment.
- Sanitation of animal rooms and support areas such as the cage wash area, storage room, procedure room and surgical suite. Sweeping and mopping of floors, walls and ceilings.
- Use of standard washer and dryer to clean lab coats, scrubs, cleaning towels and mop heads.
- Replenishes laboratory supplies within the Animal Care Facility include personal protective equipment, supplies for animals and feed and bedding.
- Use of autoclave to sterilize animals caging and animal supplies.
- Use of Biosafety Cabinets and Animal Transfer Stations while working with animals.
- Maintain logs for all equipment requiring tracking including eye wash stations, cleaning logs, cage wash and autoclave logs.
- Assist in maintaining animal breeding records within an Excel file.
- Receive new animals into the facility from approved vendors – removing animals from shipping boxes and placing them into proper housing
- Handling and restraint of mice, rats, rabbits and chickens
- Handling of breeding mice and neonates during cage changes
- Ear punching of mice for identification and tailing of mice from genotyping.
- Handling and disposal of pathological and hazardous waste and sharps items
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
- Work weekends, holidays and all school breaks
- The position is 10-20 hours a week and very flexible to accommodate the student’s class schedule each semester.
WORK SCHEDULE: (Work typically 3-4 days during the week, alternating weekend days)
- Monday: Flexible – Between 8am-5:30pm
- Tuesday: Flexible – Between 8am-5:30pm
- Wednesday: Flexible – Between 8am-5:30pm
- Thursday: Flexible – Between 8am-5:30pm
- Friday: Flexible – Between 8am-5:30pm
- Saturday: Flexible – Between 8am-5:30pm
- Sunday: Flexible – Between 8am-5:30pm
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Enrolled Cal Poly Pomona student
- Strong oral and written communication skills in English are required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education or job experience working with animals is a plus but not required.

ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS:
- Long pants and closed toed shoes (non-slip) are required when working in the Animal Care Facility
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
- Detail-oriented and diligent to follow-up and complete tasks for assigned projects.
- A positive, pleasant attitude with good problem-solving skill
- Ability to work weekends, holidays and all school breaks
