GIS Technician

Founded in 1999 in the beautiful Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, Cadre5 provides innovative technical solutions to our customers locally and nationally. Our Cadre5 Lab Partners division has partnered with The Geospatial Science and Human Security Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to recruit a qualified GIS technician. In this role you will work with a team of talented researchers, engineers, and technologists to generate training datasets and review results of Machine Learning models processing Satellite Imagery in support of critical national security missions through a team-based approach and commitment to excellence.
ORNL delivers scientific discoveries and technical breakthroughs needed to realize solutions in energy and national security and provides economic benefit to the nation. This premier research institution located near Knoxville in Oak Ridge, TN, addresses national needs through impactful research and world-leading research centers.
This is a full-time, permanent position that adopts a hybrid work model. The ideal candidate should reside within a 300-mile radius of Knoxville, TN.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Review satellite imagery to generate training data for Machine Learning algorithms.
  • Review ML model outputs and compare to satellite imagery to provide feedback on omission and false-positives in model output.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geographic Information Science, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in geospatial analysis including use of open source and/or commercial geospatial tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, PostGIS.
  • Experience with remote sensing data (aerial and satellite imagery) and ability to identify and manipulate various features (e.g. buildings, roads, etc.)
  • Experience with online mapping resources (Google, Bing, Open Street Map, etc).
  • Experience in analyzing and interacting with structured or unstructured open-source datasets.
  • Capable of working on individual tasks within a team environment.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a consistent workflow and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance is required. This requires US Citizenship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Python, SQL, and/or other similar languages for spatial processing.
  • Knowledge of building construction techniques, methods, and architecture.
