MEDIA ASSISTANT

General Definition of Work
Performs intermediate skilled administrative support work assisting students, parents and teachers in
providing library and media center services, assists with book and material processing, data entry and
maintenance, and related work as apparent or assigned.
Qualification Requirements
High school diploma or GED required and moderate experience in general administrative support
work, preferably in a school library, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
General knowledge of the practice, methods and equipment used in a library and audio visual
program and activities.
Ability to learn diverse tasks and adhere to prescribed routines.
General knowledge of MS Office applications.
Ability to perform routine record keeping.
Ability to deal effectively with students and teachers.
Skill in the use of a variety of library, audio visual and office equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents and
students.

Reports to
Media Coordinator
Essential Functions
Assists students and teachers in providing library and media center services.
Assists with book and material processing, data entry and maintenance.
Provides technical assistance to teachers and students in the selection, location and use of
program, research and educational materials and supplies.
Checks books, filmstrips, records, cassettes, magazines in and out of library.
Distributes and ensures proper care and maintenance of audio-visual equipment; trains users as
necessary.
Inspects returned books and materials for damage; performing routine and specialized repair and
maintenance on collections.
Reshelves returned books, magazines and other library materials.
Compiles monthly overdue book list and processes payments for lost/damaged books and
materials.
Compiles equipment circulation records and requests.
Prepares and maintains bulletin board, display, etc.
Assists with inventory maintenance, parts and supplies.
Prepares purchase orders and related records.
Fills, maintains and checks out pamphlets, pictures and other vertical file material.
Performs a variety of clerical tasks, including typing, data entry, reception, filing, copying, mailing,
and preparing name tags.
Assists teachers, counselors and other staff as needed; serves as testing proctor; monitors
students during lunch and after school.
Assists Tech Facilitator with basic computer needs.

General knowledge of the Dewey decimal system.
Ability to type accurately at a reasonable rate of speed.
Ability to operate a computer and word processing equipment.
Ability to learn diverse tasks and adhere to prescribed routines.
Ability to perform routine record keeping.
Ability to deal effectively with students and teachers.
Skill in the use of a variety of library, audio visual and office equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents and
students.
Physical Requirements
Requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force.
Regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive
motions.
Frequently requires standing, walking and reaching with hands and arms.
Occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting.
Work has standard vision requirements.
Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by use of the spoken word.
Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data.
Visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts.
Work has no exposure to environmental conditions.
Work is generally in a quiet location (e.g. library, private offices).
