Cabarrus County Schools is Hiring a CTE: Family and Consumer Science Teacher - Foods and Nutrition 2023-2024 Near Concord, NC

POSITION: Career & Technical Education Teacher – Family & Consumer Sciences – Foods &
Nutrition
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten Months
Reports to: Principal or designee
Purpose: The Career & Technical Education teacher provides leadership in an educational environment
that encourages and nurtures learning for all students; provides supervision to students in a variety of
school related settings; monitors and evaluates student outcomes; develops, selects or modifies lessons
plans to ensure all student needs are met; maintains appropriate records and follows all policies and
procedures of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and Cabarrus County
Schools.
RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Develop lesson plans based on the current North Carolina Career & Technical Education
Essential Standards document.
  • Help students experience the intersection of nutrition science and food preparation, while
building skills for an expanding range of career opportunities.
  • Emphasize health and social responsibility while improving the way people eat.
  • Students should learn how to manage food safety; plan and prepare meals for a variety of
consumers and clients; and explore the food system and global cuisines.
  • Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include apprenticeship, cooperative

education, entrepreneurship, internship, mentorship, school-based enterprise, service learning and
job shadowing.

  • Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) competitive events, community
service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and
workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences.
  • Develop lessons and classroom resources that support and reinforce English/language arts, social
studies, mathematics, science, technology, and interpersonal relationships.
  • Provide normal maintenance of the classroom and equipment to ensure that inventory is up-to-
date and available.
  • Utilize classroom management techniques conducive to an effective classroom climate.
  • Use appropriate techniques and strategies which promote and enhance critical, creative, and
innovative thinking capabilities of students.
  • Take all necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Follow all safety procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:

  • NC Teaching Certification in Family & Consumer Science Education (Licensure Area 710), or
Family & Consumer Science Education – Food & Nutrition / Culinary Arts (License Area 716).
  • The 40-hour New Teacher Induction Program approved by the North Carolina Department of
Public Instruction, Division of Career and Technical Education. (NOTE: Required before end of
first year of teaching.)
  • Bachelor’s degree in area of licensure with two years industry-related work experience within the
past five years.
  • Examples of Related Degrees: Family & Consumer Sciences; Food Science, Culinary Arts,
Dietetics, Food Services Management, Nutrition.
  • Professionals with related work experience and industry credentials would also be considered.
  • Work experience must be in a related work field.

nutritionist, extension agent specializing in foods and nutrition, catering manager, hospitality

Physical and Cognitive Responsibilities:

1. Work in this classification is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20
pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move
objects.

2. The work requires effective communication using speech, vision, and hearing.
Skills / Abilities:

  • Ability to manage time, meet deadlines, prioritize projects, plan starting and ending deadlines,
and successfully bring closure to projects.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability and desire to seek and pass on knowledge to others in an educational/learning
environment.
  • Proficiency in common computer desktop applications required.

General Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of North Carolina Career & Technical Education Essential Standards.
  • Knowledge of Cabarrus County Schools’ Strategic Plan.
  • Knowledge of Cabarrus County Schools’ policies, rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of General Statute 115C of the NC State Law concerning Public Education.
  • Knowledge of federal legislation, specifically the Strengthening Career and Technical Education

for the 21st Century Act (Carl D. Perkins legislation.)
