Basic Function: The following description is a GENERAL overview and not a description of a particular job. Experienced shipyard workers may serve as trades helpers, work in supply, operate as firewatcher for hot work, assist in clean up and generally get an opportunity to learn more about working in a ship yard environment. Position performs routine physical labor; moving materials, tools, and/or equipment; cleaning equipment, vehicles, machinery, and work areas; operating various types of tools, such as, pneumatic, electric, and hand; brush roll or hand brush painting. May be required to perform additional duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor for the completion of the job in a safe and timely manner.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Works independently or as a member of a work team.
  • Performs basic and physical tasks such as transporting, loading/unloading material, tools and equipment on and off trucks and ships.
  • Duties will include but are not limited to; equipment and cable removal, equipment and cable installation, paint removal, lagging removal.
  • Assist welders preparing areas for hot work, move welding equipment, welding lines and perform tasks such as lagging and painting as directed. Candidates must be capable of performing Quality work in accordance with NAVSEA Standard Item 009-04. Ability to use power tools and basic hand tools to complete tasks assigned.
Knowledge and Ability:
  • Willingness to listen, follow instructions and the ability to work with and help fellow employees.
  • Must be organized and have good housekeeping habits.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time, some heavy lifting might be required.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Determines the techniques to use and selects the proper mkaterial.
  • Must be able to work a schedule Monday- Friday 40hrs plus flexible to work weekends as well
  • OSHA 10 required or willing to obtain.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, Additional licenses, certificates, and degrees are a plus.
  • Minimum 2 years in related experience.
  • Employment is contingent upon the ability to pass background screening to obtain a DBIDS Clearance Badge.
  • Training and experience usually through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training are desirable.
  • Must be able to pass a drug test
  • Demonstrate a history of successful employment
Work Environment/Physical Abilities:
  • Frequent standing, sitting, walking, handling, feeling with hands, reaching with arms.
  • Occasional stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
  • See details at close range (within a few feet of the observer) and ability to see details at a distance.
  • Frequently works in awkward and cramped positions. Bend, stretch, twist, or reach your body, arms, and or legs.
  • Able to move in narrow and restricted passageways, up/down steep and narrow ladders or stairways, and up and down antenna masts/yardarms (onboard ships).
  • Able to carry or move objects up to 50 pounds.
