SUMMARY

The Occupational Environmental Health and Safety Specialist will use established procedures and work under the general supervision of the Environmental Health and Safety Manager to implement and maintain company policies adhering to local, state, and federal environmental, health and safety regulations. This role is involved in the design and development by the EH&S Department of the manufacturing, work areas, and work procedures and implements environmental, health, and safety initiatives. The incumbent shall be familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the environmental health and safety field. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of complex tasks, multitasks, and stays focused. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.

Key Job Functions of an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist

• Inspect, test, and evaluate workplace environments, equipment, and practices to ensure that they follow safety standards and government regulations.

• Prepare written reports on their findings.

• Design and implement workplace processes and procedures that help protect workers from hazardous work conditions.

• Evaluate programs on workplace health and safety.

• Educate employers and workers about workplace safety by preparing, and providing training programs.

• Develop and conduct employee safety and training programs.

• Demonstrate the correct use of safety equipment.

• Investigate incidents and accidents to identify what caused them and how they might be prevented.

• Examine the workplace for environmental or physical factors that could affect employee health, safety, comfort, and performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with all environmental, health, and safety regulations.

• Create, maintain, and update safety and environmental procedures/programs in accordance with applicable regulations.

• Conduct safety audits, safety committee meetings, accident investigations, ergonomic evaluations, and emergency supply inspections.

• Advise manufacturing departments on accident prevention and safety enhancements

• Coordinate safety training classes, schedules, and programs.

• Conduct new hire safety orientation.

• Keep current with changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization and communicate them appropriately.

• Conducts Storm Water inspections and sample collections.

• Obtain and renew all required environmental permits.

• Maintain the site pollution prevention plan.

• Prepare and file all reports required by permits and regulatory agencies.

• Obtain waste analysis and accumulation of data required for proper designation, labeling, placarding, and transportation.

• Coordinate with the hazardous waste transport company for proper removal and disposal of waste from site.

• Track hazardous waste and maintain documentation including account billings.

• Identify and investigate methods to reduce hazardous waste by alternative manufacturing, materials, processes, and recycling opportunities; Implement recommended changes.

• Perform weekly site checks for proper storage, labeling, disposal of hazardous waste and materials, and maintain inspection log sheets.

• Be a participant in the Emergency Response Team.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist in driving continuous improvement through safety analyses, audits, and investigations.

• Assist in maintaining and updating environmental compliance for hazardous waste, and air permits.

• Assist in driving employees to the clinic for random checks.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree EHS focus or Science.

• Three to five years of experience implementing and overseeing aspects related to an environmental, health and safety program.

• Considerable knowledge of Federal EPA/OSHA, State, and local regulations in the manufacturing industry.

• Must possess broad technical expertise, and people leadership capabilities.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Ability to effectively learn and acquire new knowledge and skills.

• Computer skills and in-depth knowledge of Microsoft Windows-based programs are required.

• Requires effective time management skills, and personal conduct.

• Ability to effectively interact with co-workers, clients, vendors, and other business contacts.

Special Certificate or Course Requirements:

• Completion of OSHA 30-hour General Industry

• 40-hour HAZWOPER training course and/or the 8-hour annual refresher course within the past 12 months is desirable.
