FLSA: Technician/Staff

Hourly Rate: $21/hr

Location: BLM Lands in Colorado and Butterfly Pavilion

Housing, food stipend and vehicles: Housing, food stipend provided when in the field.

Commitment: 28 weeks (May to December 2024) 40 hours per week (8 hours per day). This position will require fieldwork and onsite work. The first week will be onsite for training and onboarding.

Position Summary: The Research Seasonal Project Coordinator spends 40 hours/week fulfilling the research and conservation goals involving the BLM Lands pollination grant at Butterfly Pavilion, working in close cooperation with the Target Species Manager, Research Species Identification Specialist, Vice President of Science and Conservation, and Fieldwork Technicians. Work duties include project management, overseeing staff, managing and analyzing data, and report writing.

Butterfly Pavilion is currently seeking a creative, highly motivated, and energetic individual to assist in the support and management of a BLM Lands pollination grant conducting fieldwork, overseeing staff, data management and analyses, and report writing as part of a team of talented and experienced staff, interns, and volunteers.

The Research Seasonal Project Coordinator will assist in overseeing two field technicians from June to September 2024. They will oversee staff, working with their field schedule, assisting in fieldwork, identification and preservations of diurnal invertebrate pollinators, managing and analyzing data, and report writing. After September 2024, the Research Seasonal Project Coordinator will work along with the Species Identification Specialist in learning about insect taxonomy, supporting identification and report writing.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Provideactive, self-motivated participation in Butterfly Pavilion's research and conservation goals.
  • Communicate with Butterfly Pavilion staff (particularly the Target Species Manager) daily.
  • Responsible for staff oversight (2 field technicians and 1 species identification specialist).
  • Implement procedures and protocols for fieldwork, including, but not limited to; fieldwork sampling, staff schedule, record keeping, preservation and identification, data management and analyses, and report writing.
  • Support conducting pollinatorsurveys relatively close to roads on public property covering each of the following vegetative communities: shrublands, wetlands, sagebrush valleys, deserts, canyonlands, sagebrush steppes, and prairies and other grasslands.
  • Support creating a baseline dataset of existing invertebrates that will help inform BLM management strategies and outreach materials.
  • Support in insect processing, pinning, and identification.
  • Lead the scheduling of fieldwork technicians, ensuring they are supported during field season.
  • Maintain AZA standards.
  • Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers, problem solve, and communicate, within the team and when working with other teams or departments.
  • Assist in data management and analyses.
  • Assist in reports and scientific publications.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Target Species Manager.

Training:

  • NewTeam Orientation.
  • The Research Seasonal Project Coordinator will be supervised in the field before working independently and will receive In-the-field training with their supervisor (the Target Species Manager) on invertebrate surveys, GPS use, field photography, and data management.
  • The Target Species Manager and possibly other BP staff will visit field sites once per month to ensure that the Research Seasonal Project Coordinator is correctly following research protocols.

Required Minimum Qualifications/Experience:

  • 2 years' experience in staff management.
  • Degree in Biology, Zoology, or related field of study required.
  • Experience working with or mentoring interns and volunteers.
  • Experience with processing high amounts of data accurately and promptly.
  • Prior experience working with, as well as comfortable working with, individuals of different ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • Experience in invertebrate identification, preferentially North American insects. College level classes will count towards experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Entomology, advanced degree is a plus.
  • Experience collecting, preserving, and identifying invertebrates using taxonomic keys.
  • Enthusiasm to learn new concepts, field skills, and lab skills.
  • Ability to work productively in a collaborative team.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Valid driver's license and personal vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Microsoft Excel/Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience conducting independent research.
  • Experience with insect identification, especially in Colorado.
  • Experience working in a team.
  • Experience using statistical software such as R, GIS, PICES, and SYSTAT.

Additional Requirements:

  • The Research Seasonal Project Coordinator must follow all non-negotiables, check email and phone messages regularly, report injuries within 24 hours, and alertimmediate supervisor and necessary team staff when calling in from work.
  • Requiredtraining and Butterfly Pavilion functions as designated essential by department and/or organizational need.
  • Additionalduties based on organizational priorities and as assigned by the Target Species Manager.

  • The Research Seasonal Project Coordinator must have an up-to-date Tetanus vaccination.

Transportation

  • Must havea valid driver's license and the ability to commute to and from field work site and perform work duties using a rental vehicle.
  • Mileage costs for work activities will be reimbursed.
  • Must have Colorado state minimum liability insurance for operating a motor vehicle.
