Progressive Education Program is a K-12 school serving approximately 150 students with moderate to severe physical and intellectual disabilities. The principal at PEP serves as the instructional and operational leader of the school. The principal ensures all staff provides a nurturing and safe learning environment which promotes positive experiences and fosters self-esteem in all students. The principal collects, analyzes and uses multiple sources of data to guide continuous improvement in student achievement, manage school operations and evaluate/develop staff.

Job Description

Salary: State Principal Salary Schedule [8.5% - 16% local supplement]

Reports to: Superintendent

Supervises: All staff and students at PEP

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Duties, responsibilities and activities may change or new ones may be assigned at any time with or without notice.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A Master's degree, with a major in administration.
  • A valid license in administration (a NC Principal's license).
  • At least five (5) years of successful teaching and/or administrative experience.
  • Experience working with children with special needs and knowledge of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees the needs of the students and ensures that the proper equipment and supplies are available; plans for and responds appropriately in an emergency or crisis situation, utilizing District and community medical resources.
  • Maintains the well-being of the medically fragile and vulnerable students by coordinating and attending Individual Educational Program (IEP) meetings, determining class placement and monitoring delivery systems for student special education services.
  • Collaboratively creates and implements a plan for School-wide Positive Behavior Support that encourages students to set goals and monitor their own behavior.
  • Follow all rules, policies, and procedures of Buncombe County Schools, along with state and federal regulations pertaining to school issues.
  • Lead in planning, developing, coordinating, and evaluating the operations of the school. Conceptualize the broad goals and vision of the school and plan accordingly to ensure that procedures and schedules are implemented to carry out the total school program.
  • Identify annual objectives for the instructional and other programs of the school. Involve faculty and others in the development of specific curricular objectives to meet the needs of the school program in alignment with state requirements.
  • Assess student performance data to evaluate progress in the instructional program.
  • Develop a culture that is cooperative and professional among staff and students that promotes critical reflection, shared accountability, and continuous improvement that emphasizes a sense of community.
  • Provide support and structures for the development of an effective professional learning community aligned with the school improvement plan.
  • Supervise and oversee administrative duties for staff including: hiring protocols, evaluating staff performance and development, monitoring attendance/leave, and maintaining a professional work environment.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested by the Superintendent.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Ability to communicate with school staff, students, parents, and community stakeholders, clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide leadership and to supervise the planning, development, and establishment of new, modified or improved programs, services, and activities.
  • Demonstrate functional knowledge of current and relevant software systems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Manage conflict constructively at all levels.
  • Ability to perform under stress, deal with persons acting under stress, and adapt when confronted with emergency situations.
  • Sensitive to cultural differences among individuals and groups of persons.
  • Knowledge of confidentiality requirements in local, and state/federal laws and regulations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 15 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects or assist students.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities. Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Vision: Frequent near acuity and occasional far acuity. Mobility to work in a typical office setting, computer work, and to use standard office equipment.
  • Environmental Conditions: varies from classrooms to exposure to outside weather conditions with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to noise intensity levels ranging from moderate to loud for occasional to frequent time periods.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 Months

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in the NC Educator Effectiveness System, in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
