Assistant Principal (Dean of Culture): BuildUP Community School

Reports to: Executive Director

Job Overview: The Dean of Culture & Curriculum is responsible for facilitating the culture of the school, including the development of student character and ensuring a positive and structured environment that creates the conditions for learning and advancement toward mission success. This position requires an organized and consistent educator with a concrete vision of excellence, adult leadership capabilities, the ability to build outstanding relationships with teachers, staff and community stakeholders, and a talent for inspiring students to high expectations. This position is an opportunity to play a significant role in academic achievement and character development and helping students achieve the ultimate goal of homeownership.

Key Responsibilities:

Student Culture

  • Collaborate with school leadership to establish a safe, career-focused and achievement-oriented school culture
  • Facilitate teacher training around student and parent relationship building, modeling high expectations and classroom management
  • Develop a school-wide behavior management system based on restorative justice practices
  • Serve as the point person for culture violations, including maintaining the reactive systems and data for removal, detention, out-of-school suspension, and parent re-entry meetings
  • Track and report student behavior issues to inform and direct staff and families and to provide restorative actions and solutions
  • Ensure that the physical environment of the school reinforces school culture and facilitates student growth toward mission success
  • Create, amend and review admissions policies, student handbook and protocols annually as necessary
  • Plan, lead and oversee regular parent engagement meetings

Stakeholder Engagement and Management

  • Lead school-wide recognition assemblies, parent workshops, community events, and other culture-building activities
  • Support teachers in building relationships with students and parents
  • Implement a plan to address chronic attendance issues, behavior issues or other emerging patterns
  • Ensure that school remains in good standing with its accreditation agency
  • Participate in all IEP 504 meetings for students as necessary
  • Conduct all interviews of prospective students with a committee of parents, teachers and students
  • Assist in interviewing and selecting new teacher candidates

Instructional Coaching & Curriculum

  • Conduct classroom observations and bi-monthly coaching sessions to build relationships, review data, and provide feedback.
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to align or amend curriculum with student academic and vocational needs.
  • Lead data-driven instruction meetings and facilitate school-wide assessments to identify and address student achievement gaps.
  • Support staff professional development and make recommendations for external training.
  • Provide feedback on lesson plans and conduct biannual teacher performance evaluations.

Other

  • Serve as an active member of the School Leadership Team.
  • Follow school and organizational protocols as noted in the employee handbook or as otherwise stated by the Executive Director or Board of Directors.
  • Attend all staff meetings or meetings deemed necessary by school leadership.
  • Support recruitment efforts by attending recruitment events.

Desired Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master's Degree preferred
  • At least 3-5 years of teaching or school leadership in under-resourced communities with a proven record of achievement
  • Proven experience coaching and leading adults with a track record of exemplary relationship building and trust.
  • Strong understanding of culturally sensitive and responsive pedagogy and leadership
  • Team player: demonstrates maturity, trustworthiness, growth mindset, strong work ethic, follow-through and flexibility
