Position Summary:

Reporting to the California Director of Strategic Partnerships, the Senior Community (Volunteer) Engagement Manager (SCEM) sets the strategy for California’s volunteer program and ensures excellence in execution, which includes supervising Los Angeles' Community Engagement Manager. This position plays a leadership role in building a critically needed diverse, inclusive, healthy and high performing volunteer workforce of caring adults in service to our students.

 

The SCEM is directly responsible for Bay Area volunteer recruitment, training, stewardship and retention. They develop and implement research-based training, tools, and interventions for volunteers engaged in the Bay Area region and shared with other regions as best practices. The SCEM will also supervise Los Angeles’s Community Engagement Manager, ensuring that program delivery, data collection, and volunteer experiences are similar across the state.

 

The SCEM should care deeply about the students we serve and be able to speak compellingly with broad external audiences, including business and community leaders, about the value of volunteering with students, and organizations/companies. The ideal candidate has experience in diversity, equity and inclusion work and in non-profit and youth development. This position requires the ability to switch from administrative tasks to strategy and implementation. The ideal candidate desires to operate in a high-energy, entrepreneurial environment where innovation, collaboration and creativity are valued and expected.

 

Position Responsibilities:

Strategy & Management

  • Utilizing a youth development lens, develop the strategy for and oversee the Bay Area volunteer and mentor life cycle including recruitment, interviewing, training, safety protocols, placement, performance, support, and engagement; share best practices with a national cohort of community engagement colleagues

  • Lead the vision and implementation for creating a robust California volunteer base through scalable systems; support BUILD volunteer opportunity at corporate, funder and community based organizations

  • Inform best practices for successful execution of skills-based workshops for students coordinated by California’s Director of Strategic Partnerships and Program Department and hosted by our partner companies and nonprofit organizations. E.g., mock interviews, pitch practices, financial literacy, career panels

  • Codify best practices to leverage strategic partners to build a pipeline for volunteers and to steward those individuals

  • Supervise the Los Angeles Community Engagement Manager, and collaborate with the California Director of Strategic Partnerships to ensure Bay Area and Los Angeles programs are aligned and meeting yearly goals

Administrative & Volunteer Operations

  • Build a diverse, equitable and inclusive volunteer community that supports our students in their BUILD journey from 9th-grade through post-secondary 

  • Develop the training and tools needed for BUILD volunteers to successfully support our students; implement support practices to provide volunteers, including mentors, with feedback and opportunities for them to develop their skills in service to our students 

  • Develop and implement a robust mentor screening process, adhering to all safety practices that protect our students

  • Develop and lead execution of systems for accurate California mentor data entry and tracking in Salesforce database; utilize data to understand and articulate mentor experience, impact and make decisions about recruitment and engagement strategies

  • Working with regional leadership, ensure all California mentors have met necessary screening requirements and/or administrative requirements to be in contact with our students as mandated by our organization and school districts

  • Support the development of statewide volunteer marketing material, including newsletters, student impact stories and volunteer testimonials

  • Support organizing student centered volunteer events, including Business Plan Competitions, Job Shadow Days, and BUILDFest

 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, or transferable life experience; 5 years professional experience

  • 2 two years of effective supervisory experience including: coaching employees to reach their potential through professional development, goal setting and mentoring

  • 5 years’ professional experience in successfully developing and implementing adult volunteer programs serving high school students of BUILD students’ background, or transferrable experience; corporate volunteer experience highly preferred

  • Ability to effectively communicate to and gain buy-in from a broad and diverse set of external constituents, including corporate employees and executives and community-based organization leaders

  • Familiarity with Salesforce or other CRM databases a plus

Position Details:

 
  • Status: Full Time/Exempt

  • Location: Bay Area, CA; this is a hybrid role in that you will be expected to attend in person student events and attend regional activities, on average 2-4 times a month during the school year. Otherwise, you can remotely work as needed or desired. BUILD offices are located in Oakland and San Mateo.

  • Travel: Ability to travel in Greater Bay Area; periodic travel to Los Angeles and nationally for all organizational retreats

  • Evening and weekend hours periodically required 

 

Compensation:

The salary for Sr. Community (Volunteer) Engagement Manager ranges from $80-90k in accordance with BUILD’s equity focused salary & talent bands. For employees who qualify, BUILD offers a 403(b) plan with match, generous vacation and sick time, paid Federal holidays, and December 24 through January 2 off. We also are proud to offer a flexible work environment, professional development and additional stipends for stretch projects.
