Job Description

POSITION TITLE: Custodian

DEPARTMENT: Buildings & Grounds

REPORTS TO: Facilities Director

SUPERVISES:

PURPOSE OF POSITION: Cleaning and custodial work in assigned county buildings to maintain County property in an orderly, sanitary, and attractive condition.

Essential Functions

Sweeps, strips wax, mops, waxes, and buffs floors; vacuums and shampoos carpets.

Cleans counters, walls, woodwork, windows, glass, Venetian blinds, and water fountains.

Cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies (i.e., soap, tissue, etc.); dusts, polishes, and moves furniture; empties waste baskets and recyclable bins.

Polishes brass, chrome, metal, and wood paneling.

Cuts grass, pulls weeds, shovels snow, salts ice, rakes leaves, waters lawn and flowers, trims hedges, and picks up trash and litter.

Sets up and takes down chairs and tables for meetings and special events.

Performs minor maintenance duties such as changing light bulbs, changing filters, and general repairs of carpet shampooers, scrubbers and vacuum cleaners.

Takes inventory and orders supplies; keeps supply room stocked and cleaned.

Performs other related duties as directed or as the situation dictates.

Essential Knowledge, Experience, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of cleaning materials, methods, equipment, and procedures.

Thorough knowledge of and the ability to perform the procedures utilized in minor maintenance work.

Thorough knowledge of proper chemical use and dilution ratios, and understanding of

MSDS information and use.

Ability to safely operate and care for cleaning equipment and tools.

Ability to prepare and maintain simple records including the basic use of a computer.

Ability to learn repetitive duties quickly, prioritize them, and carry them through independently and responsibly.

Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions

Ability to work efficiently and complete duties with minimal supervision.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Ability to establish and maintain positive rapport with supervisors, fellow employees, and the general public while presenting a positive image for the county.

Essential Physical Demands and Typical Working Conditions

Work requires a considerable amount of walking, standing, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and stooping.

Work requires that employee be able to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment and supplies weighing up to 75 pounds.

Set up and climb free-standing ladders.

Work requires the ability to tolerate a work environment, which includes contact with dust, dirt, and cleaning solvents.

Work may be performed outdoors year around and in inclement weather and requires the ability to tolerate a work environment that includes contact with acids, dirt, cleaning solvent, and bacteria.

Essential Attendance and Availability Requirements

▪ Must maintain an acceptable level of attendance, punctuality, and availability as determined by the County; must work such regularly-scheduled hours as are determined by the County; must work any required overtime, weekends, and holidays.

▪ Must work at the assigned work sites.

▪ Must travel as required.
