SUMMARY:

Bud and Mary’s Cannabis’s Research Associate is responsible for preparing, analyzing, and evaluating laboratory samples collected during the daily operation of MedPharm Research following GMP policies and procedures. Additional responsibilities include the preparation and analysis of analytical samples as outlined in the Institute of Cannabis Research’s LABeL study following ISO17025 policies and procedures. Further work will involve the isolation and characterization of minor cannabinoids and other chemical species for lead compound identification for research involving neuroinflammation and Alzheimer’s disease. The Research Associate will work closely with the Director of Pharmacology and Laboratory Manager to complete study goals outlined in these projects while bringing their own expertise in analytical and/or medicinal chemistry to these projects.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • The ideal candidate will be passionate about using synthetic chemistry and data analysis skills to solve medicinal chemistry challenges and will excel at working closely with scientists across disciplines.
  • Bachelor’s degree of science with 5 years, M.S. with 3 years, or Ph.D. with 0-1 years' experience in analytical chemistry, or a related field with a focus on natural product isolation and characterization or experience in small molecule organic synthesis/ characterization and/or drug discovery experience in a biotechnology or pharmaceutical setting.
  • Three (3) years of analytical chemistry experience preferred.
  • Valid and current Colorado Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) Occupational Badge.
  • Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without restriction or sponsorship

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:.

  • Applicants will be required to work closely with the Director of Pharmacology on isolation and characterization of minor cannabinoids from plant extracts.
  • Develop and execute isolation methods for natural products and metabolites from complex matrices (e.g., environmental, biological, or plant) via chromatographic and other techniques.
  • Perform routine maintenance and standardization on laboratory equipment. Diagnose and perform minor repairs on laboratory instrumentation.
  • Prepare and analyze analytical samples for MedPharm’s in-house HPLC system.
  • Prepare standards and quality control solutions and perform calculations involving dilutions.
  • Perform data entry and recovery using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Following all ISO17025:2017 and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) policies, procedures, and documentation of lab results.
  • Ensure that analytical results are accurate and precise through the effective use of quality assurance and quality control protocols to the cGMP and ISO17025 standards.
  • Analyze and prepare data for publication with collaborators and the laboratory manager.
  • Comply with all EH&S regulations and policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities, including special projects, as requested, or assigned

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

  • Extensive experience with a broad range of analytical and preparative chromatographic separation techniques (e.g. HILIC, Ion exchange, LC-MS, Prep and SemiPrep HPLC, Analytical HPLC).
  • Applicants must be fluent with high-performance liquid chromatography instrumentation use, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
  • Structure elucidation of natural product isolates using both 1D and 2D NMR techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience, knowledge, and skill in the operation of standard laboratory equipment and general laboratory practices.
  • Ability to design feasible synthetic routes to target molecules and choose appropriate reaction conditions.
  • Experience with the isolation and characterization of plant natural products (preferred).
  • A background in natural products chemistry or knowledge of natural product biosynthetic pathways.
  • Expanded understanding with laboratory standard concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Highly organized with excellent analytical, documentation, time management, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, i.e., conveying technical information in a clear and thorough manner to audiences with different experience and training.
  • Present concepts, research plans, project updates and accomplishments internally to peers and senior management team or externally to customers and others.
  • Meticulous organization and attention to detail.
  • All candidates must have a good attitude and a strong work ethic.
  • Be able to follow all standard operating procedures.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.

PHYSICAL EFFORT NEEDED:

  • Must be able to lift at least fifty (50) pounds and work on feet for extended periods of time.
  • The work environment is typical of a research and development laboratory.
  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Biosafety Laboratory Level 2 (BSL2)

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:

  • Safety shoes, safety glasses, dust and surgical masks, ear protection, hair/beard nets, various types of gloves, lab coat, chemical resistant sleeves

TRAVEL:

  • Some travel may be required for training purposes and for staying abreast of industry developments. Additional travel maybe be required to present data and other information at scientific conferences and meetings.
