The Supervisor is responsible for implementing, under the direction of the Manager, the steps necessary to achieve the goals and objectives of the department. The Supervisor takes direct responsibility for department operations, technical leadership, and the development of the department staff. The Supervisor plans, coordinates and directs the operations of the department, so that analytical results are performed within holding times, meets appropriate quality and deliverable requirements, and meets client or project specific requirements.

Salary Range: $67,600-$88,400

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Exercises general supervision over assigned staff of department:
a. Insures staff follows established standard operational and safety procedures, and certifies that personnel have the appropriate educational and technical background to perform the accredited tests that they perform.
b. Schedules and assigns responsibilities for department staff. Establishes workload requirements and objectives.
c. Sets performance objectives and evaluation criteria.
d. Conducts periodic department training, reviews and meetings.
e. Conducts periodic employee performance reviews for the purpose of:
  • Appraising need for coaching or counseling in order to improve employee performance and motivation.
  • Providing management with the information necessary to establish salary adjustments, and to document steps to rectify and improve substandard employee performance.
f. Coordinates with the Manager in the recruiting and hiring of new employees.
g. Directs the orientation and training of new employees, as well as the educational direction of existing staff.
h. Approves vacation and working schedules, as well as complete and review weekly timecards for all employees.

2. Methods Evaluation & Development:
a. Reviews and evaluates existing methods and/or procedures, recommends necessary changes, and coordinates with other departments for maintaining production of results.
b. Monitors the standards of performance through the quality control standards of the quality assurance system.
c. Plans, organizes and develops procedures for new methods of analyses, for market enhancement and new certifications.
d. Coordinates with the QA/QC department the performance, review, and corrective action steps of the Performance Testing (PT) sample program, in order to maintain department certifications.

3. Client Satisfaction:
a. Supports Leads in review and release of analytical results, including evaluation of raw data packages, and establishment and maintenance of quality control acceptance criteria, so that reliable and valid data is generated.
b. Maintains analytical schedule to achieve maximum production and customer satisfaction, especially ensuring that sufficient numbers of qualified personnel are employed to supervise and perform the work.
c. Maintains delivery of results to meet turn-around time requirements and client needs.
d. Reviews RFP requirements as they pertain to analytical capabilities in their department and provides input regarding compliance with requests.
e. Coordinates with Technical Services, the Solutions Administrator and the Department Manager to adapt department operations in preparation for large projects to ensure success.

4. Equipment & laboratory supplies:
a. Maintains familiarity with the operations of equipment used in the department, and coordinates with Technical Services department for repair, maintenance, and enhancement of equipment.
b. Establishes maintenance schedules, and ensures that schedule is met with appropriate records kept in the instrument log.
c. Coordinates with the Manager in specifying and purchasing replacement or expansion equipment.
d. Maintain adequate stock of service parts and supplies.
e. Arranges for factory service and other outside vendor assistance, when required.
f. Insures that department personnel is familiar with the consumable inventory for the department and submit in a timely fashion requests for supplies.

5. Other duties as assigned.
