About this Opportunity

Brunswick County is looking for a full-time Planner I OR Planner II to join our Planning Department. Brunswick County Planning provides public planning services to the unincorporated areas of the county that are outside municipalities' planning jurisdiction. Services include zoning, subdivision of land, long-range planning, transportation planning, specialized projects, etc.

The Planner will perform professional planning work and be responsible for reviewing and processing a variety of planning-related requests and regularly working with the public on planning-related issues. Work includes:
  • reviewing development proposals for conformance with specific planning programs, plans, and/or ordinances.
  • providing technical assistance and information to staff and to the public.
A Planner I would perform more entry-level planning work, while a Planner II would be expected to perform work at an intermediate level and would be assigned to handle more complex planning issues related to site plans, plats, development projects, board cases, and permits. Placement as a Planner I or Planner II will be based on the candidate's education and number of years of directly related, progressively responsible experience in planning, plan review, and zoning administration. Hiring ranges are:
  • Planner I: $24.75 - $33.41 hour
  • Planner II: $28.65 - 38.68 hour
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), high attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while exercising good judgement are required. This position reports directly to the Planning Director.
Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in planning, urban studies, geography, natural sciences, architecture, or a closely related field, AND planning knowledge and work experience, OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Valid NC or SC Driver License required.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office products (specifically Excel) and have general understanding of geographic information systems (GIS) software and tools.
  • Two (2) years of experience in planning, plan review, zoning administration, and/or GIS is highly desirable.
Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle and a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, blue line map machines, drafting supplies, calculators, cameras, copiers, facsimile machines, etc. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are for those for Medium Work.
