This key position is with Brown Surgical Associates (BSA) which is one of Rhode Island’s largest multidisciplinary surgical groups and a founding member of BPI. Our 50 surgeons are recognized for their experience in highly specialized areas of surgery.

In this role, you will function as the Medical Secretary and report to the office supervisor/practice manager. You will:

  • Work with physicians, secretarial and clinical staff to facilitate patient-centered care. Proficiency in using computer software for appointment scheduling. Display professionalism while addressing patient issues. Adheres to HIPAA guidelines.
  • Answer all incoming telephone calls and respond to messages retrieved from the answering service, refers calls as needed and follows through to ensure timely response.
  • Schedule office appointments, tests, imaging studies, in-patient and out-patient procedures. Ensure paperwork is submitted to the appropriate hospital department. Contact patients and families as needed. Obtain referrals for office visits, authorizations for surgical procedures/tests, and diagnostic imaging.
  • Manage surgical billing and hospital services billing performed by the physician. Complete insurance, TDI, and Workers Comp forms; prepare and submit check requests and maintain up to date CME files.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the office supervisor/practice manager.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • Experience in a medical-surgical office setting required.
  • Knowledge of ICD-10, CPT codes and medical terminology required.
  • Graduate of an accredited medical secretarial school or college preferred.
  • Employees are required to be vaccinated against COVID as a condition of employment.
  • Ability to represent the organization in a professional manner and promote a positive image of the organization and its services.
  • Ability to walk, sit, and stand for long periods of time, ability to lift 20 pounds.
