SUMMARY

Coordinate activities of switch-engine crew engaged in switching railroad cars within yard or plant railroad tracks, industrial plant locations. Coordinate activities engaged in railroad traffic operations, such as the makeup or breakup of train cars and switching to align with loading order on specified section of tracks, spotting, or operation of track mobile. Review train schedules and switching orders.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Spots and instructs workers engaged in yard activities, such as switching track, coupling/uncoupling cars, and routing inbound/outbound traffic.
  • Signals engineer to begin train run, stop train, or change speed, using radio, telephone, lantern, or hand signals.
  • Reviews schedules, switching orders, waybills, and shipping records to obtain cargo loading and unloading information.
  • Observes yard traffic to determine tracks available to accommodate inbound and outbound traffic.
  • Instructs workers to set warning signals in front and rear of train during emergency stops to warn oncoming trains.
  • Operates controls to electrically activate track switches and traffic signals or conveys to proper person of need.
  • Inspects or assists workers in inspection and maintenance of mechanical equipment to ensure efficient and safe train operation
  • Inspects freight cars for compliance with sealing procedures, records car, and corresponding seal number, and confirms route and destination information
  • Documents and prepares reports of accidents, unscheduled stops, or delays at completion of train run.
  • Charts train movements to estimated arrival times.
  • Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules, including wearing required personal safety equipment. Performs other duties as required.
