We are searching for a a Controls/Automation Engineer to design, program, debug, and support automated systems and equipment for production. Please consider joining our team at one of our company locations - Beaverton, MI; Fremont, OH; or Knoxville, TN. 
The engineer will be responsible for offering electrical design input and assisting in concept and development efforts within the facility, either through programming, or controls design. Extensive PLC, Robot, HMI, and electrical controls skills are necessary. He/she will offer troubleshooting assistance on all electrical and/or controls equipment to resolve issues. The Automation Controls Engineer role requires a collaborative team working style and the ability to work with many other work styles including management, plant operators, supervisors, and additional engineers; the engineer must be self-motivated; able to work with minimum supervision; possesses a skill set that will enable and drive continuous improvement.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Design electrical hardware circuit and safety control circuit for automated machines and equipment.
  2. Create electrical hardware drawings and schematics using AutoCAD Electrical.
  3. Develop cost estimates for electrical systems - including purchased components and design labor.
  4. Program machine software: A/B and Omron (optional), PLCs, Yaskawa, ABB Robots, A/B, Omron, Proface, & Exor HMIs
  5. Understand IT systems, networking, and IoT: Ethernet IP, Network addressing schemes & NAT, Configuration of Managed Network Switches and VPN devices
  6. Trouble shooting during machine build and early-stage running. 
  7. Provide on-going technical support for in-house technicians in the machine-building group.
  8. Review with design team to ensure quality and internal design practices are being met.
  9. Communicate regular timely updates on projects in a clear and concise manner.
  10. Travel as required for the role; Assist in robot system installations and support at customer facilities.

 OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Support technical writing of training materials, operation manuals, and instructions.
  2. Perform other related duties as may be required.
  3. Follow all applicable safety procedures and policies as outlined in the BMG Employee Handbook.
  4. Maintain good housekeeping in work area.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A minimum of a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Technology disciplines and/or 3 years of experience working as controls engineer or related role.
  • Training or experience on A/B and Omron PLC’s, and Yaskawa Robot AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Experience or specialization in the following robotics subject areas: Controls, Motion Planning, Computer Vision/Robotic perceptions, System integration and test.
  • Independently manage a workload consisting of long-term projects and unplanned day-to-day priorities with proven project completion history with successful results.
  • Proficient knowledge of CAD/CAM software, 3D modeling and MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to develop and evaluate integrated systems.
  • Hands-on work preference with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication, professional and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and potentially internationally up to 25% of the time. An up-to-date passport and other required documentation needed for international travel will need to be current.
  • A minimum requirement for this position is the ability to work legally in the United States on a permanent basis. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position.

ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 lbs at times.
  • Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities (i.e. climb stairs, ladders, etc.)
