Brown Emergency Medicine is Hiring a Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant Near Providence, RI

Brown Emergency Medicine (Brown EM) is the academic emergency medicine physician practice plan of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Brown EM provides emergency department staffing for Rhode Island hospital, the only Level I trauma center in this region; Hasbro Children's Hospital, Rhode Island's only children's specialty hospital; The Miriam Hospital, a leading community teaching hospital and Newport Hospital, a community Magnet Hospital, Brown EM member physicians and providers treat over 250,000 patients per year at our four clinical sites, drawing patients from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Brown EM is looking for an Advanced Practice Provider (nurse practitioner or physician assistant) who is responsible for practicing emergency medicine in an Emergency Department setting. An Emergency Department Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive healthcare services. Advanced Practice Providers will take medical histories, examine and treat patients, order and interpret laboratory tests and x-rays, and make diagnoses. They will also perform diagnostic/therapeutic procedures and treat minor injuries, by suturing, splinting, and casting

Primary responsibilities are as follows:

  • All patients who present for care will be assessed for an emergency medical condition under the criteria embodied in EMTALA
  • Perform initial evaluations and treatment with a concurrent evaluation by the ED Staff Physician
  • Perform treatment for critical care patients if the ED Staff Physician is physically present in exam room during the time of evaluation
  • Conduct history and physical exam on patients in the emergency department and dictate patient's records
  • Draw blood
  • Venous and arterial (ABG) excluding femoral draws
  • Start IV lines
  • Insertion of foley catheters
  • Order appropriate respiratory therapy
  • Issuance of prescription medications
  • Order and preliminary interpretation of laboratory studies
  • Request support devices including medical/surgical consults, radiological studies, and case management
  • Epistaxis control
  • Cauterizing
  • Anterior packing
  • Fluorescein staining
  • Removal of foreign body
  • Perform incisions and drainage
  • Insertion and removal of NG tubes
  • Local and digital never anesthesia
  • Minor wound management/suturing
  • Slit lamp evaluation
  • General triage
  • May perform specialized and supervised procedures if privileged to do so
  • Attends internal/external meetings/conferences/training opportunities related to areas of responsibility
  • Must maintain professional behavior

The qualifications for this job are as follows:

  • Master's degree in either a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) program
  • Minimum of 1-2 experience in an emergency department setting
  • National Certifying Commission of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certificate or equivalent NP certificate
  • Satisfactory completion of approved training program and certification by National Licensing Boards for PA/NP
  • Must be a credentialed member of the RI Hospital Medical Staff
  • Ability to handle confidential information in a professional manner
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must have proficient computer skills specific to the MS suite
