Position Summary

Provide supervision over the health, welfare, and safety of inmates, staff and public within a secured jail facility with a 56 bed capacity.

Position also ensures compliance with department policy and Department of Correction's standards for a county correctional facility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Respond to medical emergencies within the facility.

Must be knowledgeable in all county and jail policies and procedures, and operations. Must be proficient in the use of the jail and State computer.

Maintain safety and security in the jail. Must search inmates, property brought in, and the entire jail facility.

Have to be able to keep accurate logs, and updated files.

Verify, administer, and log medications.

Conduct daily indiscriminate strip searches of work release inmates upon return from work.

Monitor volunteers that come in to provide activities for the inmates.

See to the daily needs of the inmates.

Can be a bailiff for court at times, and make occasional transports.

Receive training in federal, state and local laws as they apply in law enforcement and detention facilities, including federal and state correction standards.

Miscellaneous duties assigned by department heads.

Qualifications

Minimum of 1 year post-secondary education in law enforcement, corrections, sociology, or related field and 2 years related experience OR High School / GED Diploma and 4 years related experience.

Current First Responder Certification Preferred. Ability to use judgment and problem solving skills in dealing with inmates.

Ability to react effectively in emergency and stressful situations. Good written and verbal skills. Ability to maintain a professional attitude.

Satisfactorily pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen, psychological evaluation and background investigation. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, law enforcement, other agencies, and the public.

Ability to develop skill in the use and care of county equipment used in the jail system.

Grade 5

Hourly hiring range is $24.31 to $27.25, with a full earning potential of $34.26 per hour dependent on qualifications and experience.

Health InsuranceFull-Time employees and employees working 30 or more hours per week may choose between single or family coverage.

Eligibility begins on the first day of the month after the date of active employment.

The County has designated a base plan which is a high deductible plan with an HSA option. The County contributes monthly towards the cost of the health plan premiums with a semi-annual county contribution into employee's HSA for the single or the family coverage plan.

For regular part time employees working 30 hours / week year around, the County will pay 75% of the county share of single coverage (base plan) which may be applied towards family coverage and also contribute 75% of the employer HSA contribution.

Life InsuranceFull-Time Employees are provided with the following term life insurance benefit at no cost to them. Regular part-time employees working 30 or more hours per week are eligible for this benefit with County paying 75% of premium.

Eligibility begins on the first day of the month after the date of active employment.

$20,000 term life / $20,000 AD&D

Short Term Disability InsuranceFull-Time Employees are provided with a short Term disability insurance benefit at no cost to them.

Regular part-time employees working 30 or more hours per week are eligible for this benefit with County paying 75% of premium.

Eligibility begins on the first day of the month after the date of active employment.

RetirementThe County and the employee contribute to PERA (Public Employees Retirement Association)

  • Employees must participate as directed by Minnesota statutes.
  • Contribution rates vary depending on position.
  • Employee may obtain refund of employee contribution upon termination of service.
