Brooklyn Public Library is Hiring a Part-Time Digital Literacy Instructor Near Brooklyn, NY

Overview

The Digital Literacy Instructor, through instruction and one-on-one support, helps BPL users develop the digital skills that will ensure they have equitable access to critical online information, whether they are preparing for a job, starting a business, or managing personal finances. The candidate will be instrumental in planning the programs and services that increase the digital competency of Brooklynites who turn to the library for access to computers and internet, but who do not have the computer skills to use them. The job will focus on creating and presenting interactive workshops and managing complementary drop-in practice labs. The candidate will also monitor and promote online learning tools such as iC3, as well as proctor the examinations that lead to certification. The position requires regular interface with the public and support to Business & Career Center staff in responding to the technology needs of patrons.

Responsibilities

  • Increase digital skills of BPL users, especially to access information and services online
  • Develop quality interactive training on basic and more advanced digital tools and software programs; create curriculum, deliver workshops, gather feedback
  • Manage regular drop-in practice labs to facilitate hands-on learning and address specific tech questions
  • Administer access to BPL’s online digital skills platforms, such as iC3 and proctor certification tests
  • Create handouts and user guides in print and on BPL’s website
  • Develop innovative ways to introduce the novice to computer basics, including keyboarding, email, and internet searching, so that they can create and store documents such as resumes and make online applications
  • Work with BPL’s team of Technical Resource Specialists to build on existing training modules and share best practices 
  • Be knowledgeable of and promote the use of BPL Online Resources as useful tools and sources of information
  • Provide assistance at the customer service desk as needed
  • Regularly evaluate the technology needs of those looking for work, conducting business, filling out forms and applications, doing research or needing tech assistance to advance their financial wellbeing and create customer focused responses to assist them and enhance their digital literacy 

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; College experience preferred
  • Basic technical knowledge and intermediate skills in the following applications and environments: 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), macOS and Google Workspace 
  • Proficiency with iOS and Android smartphones and tablets 
  • Experience identifying and troubleshooting hardware and software problems 
  • Knowledge of iC3 Digital Literacy suite of products and certification process a plus
  • Proficiency in computer instruction; 3 or more years of experience teaching digital skills classes 
  • Excellent communication & customer service skills
  • Self-starter with enthusiasm and commitment to teaching hands-on programs
  • Candidates must be flexible, able to handle multiple competing priorities and tasks, adapatable to change and able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Available for occasional evening and weekend work

This is part time position with an up to 19 hour work week and an hourl rate of $23-$25 per hour.
