The Brooklyn Kindergarten Society (BKS) is the original “born in Brooklyn”. We were founded in 1891, and for 130 years, BKS has helped provide high-quality early childhood education to working families. BKS has grown up with the borough and continues to be a leader in equal access to high quality early childhood education. BKS sees its mission as providing an equal first educational step to some of our borough’s youngest learners. We provide full day, year-round academic experiences and care for children ages 2-5 years old. Our curriculum is play based and marries together reading, writing, movement and music, with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) learning. Our goal is to ensure that Brooklyn’s youngest learners have an equal first educational step.

For more than 125 years, Brooklyn Kindergarten Society has worked to ensure children from low-income families receive a quality education in a nurturing environment that cultivates the skills they need to succeed in kindergarten and beyond. Our early childhood learning centers are located in public housing in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, and Brownsville, and serve 400 children and their families. BKS children receive full-day educational classes with evidence-based, age-appropriate curricula and enrichment programs. We recognize that familiesthe key to childrens successoften benefit from... resources and support beyond the classroom. To that end, the BKS family services staff provides counseling, referral services, and workshops for children and their families. BKS strives to stop the cycle of poverty where it does the most harmin early childhood. Although two of every three children who enter BKS centers test at-risk for developmental delays, BKS reverses this delay. Year after year, more than 90% complete the BKS program on par with or better than their peers across all socio-economic groups!
