Brookline Public Schools is Hiring a PSB Steps to Success Program Advisors for High School Near Brookline, MA

PSB Steps to Success Advisors for high school work with economically disadvantaged Brookline High students. They serve in an advisory capacity, working with families and helping students to achieve academically, set personal goals, and have a post-high school plan (i.e. college, vocation, work, gap year program, etc).

Under the direction of the PSB STS District Director, responsibilities include:

  • Work intensively during the school day (8:30-3:00pm) with individual students identified as STS participants in grades 9-12 as a school-based program advisor to students and their families.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, guidance counselors, social workers and other school staff to effectively support students' academic and personal growth
  • Build personal relationships that improve connections between home and school.
  • Conduct frequent outreach on behalf of students. Inform parents/guardians about extended school day programs and help families access programs and other community resources and opportunities.
  • Communicate with families of rising 9th graders, introducing them to BHS and STS, Inc opportunities, encouraging and facilitating participation.
  • Work closely with Elementary/Middle School STS advisors to facilitate a positive transition to High School programs for rising 9th graders.
  • Attend relevant school meetings (ex: IEP meetings) on behalf of student/family.
  • Maintain student data on participation in STS activities.
  • Facilitate STS Seminar courses. Develop course plan and activities in collaboration with the PSB STS District Director, Deans, Guidance, and with input from STS, Inc.
  • Work with the STS College Success Initiative (CSI) Advisors to provide information, programming and support to juniors and seniors.
  • Facilitate student access to extended school day/year programs and opportunities; support positive student participation in afterschool and summer programs
  • Work with PSB District Director to plan and carry out vacation week college visits for students.
  • Plan and supervise after-school activities for BHS STS students (ex: homework center); maintain a presence in the Steps room until 4pm each day to provide after school support and programming to individual students and groups.
  • Support student enrollment in summer program opportunities provided by Steps to Success,Inc. and other partners; monitor students during the summer to ensure students are attending and successfully completing their summer programming experience (camps, extended learning, internships, jobs); maintain data on participation in STS programs.

PSB Advisors report to the PSB Unit B Director.

PSB Advisors for Brookline High School are supervised by the PSB Unit B Steps to Success Director, with input from BHS Head of School.

Program Advisors positions are full year. Advisors work a 7.5 hour day (8 hours with half hour break). An advisor's default daily schedule will be from 8 to 4. Advisors will transition to the management of after-school programs at 3pm. Hours may be adjusted to accommodate other regularly occurring morning, afternoon and/or evening program responsibilities.

Qualifications:

  • Background and proven ability in working effectively to motivate and involve youth in this age group and families of diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in counseling, supporting, and conveying high expectations for young people.
  • Familiarity with adolescent development.
  • Strong written and oral communication and public presentation skills.
  • Experience working as a part of a collaborative team.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Citizenship, residency or work VISA in United States

Preferred qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of relevant experience preferred
  • Master's degree in Social Work or related field
  • Bilingual (Spanish/Haitian Creole) a plus
